West Somerset College (sometimes abbreviated to WSC and known informally as 'The West Somerset Community College.') is a fairly large secondary school in Minehead, Somerset, England. It provides education for students aged 13 to 16 (school years 9–11) in the main school and 16 to 18 (school years 12–13) in the sixth form (West Somerset uses a three-tier school system). WSCC has had Technology College status for several years, meaning the College receives additional funding. In June 2011, the school became an Academy. The school has a partnership with a secondary school (Gymnasium) in Bünde, Germany.

The College recently gained an unsatisfactory Ofsted report, which stated that the College 'was failing in every department and the leadership does not seem to acknowledge this. ' The school has been put in to special measures. [1]

In light of this report and the falling GCSE results,[2] there has been an online petition requesting that the Principal, Gaynor Comber be removed from her post. So far it has gained over 200 supporters.[3]

The opposition, in favor of keeping Mrs Comber as head, mainly led by sixth form students have also began an online petition although this petition has yet to reach 10 supporters.

Facilities[edit]

The school is housed in a number of buildings of various ages and condition. There are separate buildings for the Sixth Form block, common room for Sixth Form students, Skills and Enterprise Centre which was opened in 2008 and a large Farm Unit where students are taught agricultural skills. The Skills and Enterprise building allows students to study subjects like, Hair and Beauty, Hairdressing, Hospitality, Animal Care, Construction etc.

All classrooms have digital projectors and some classrooms have interactive whiteboards with laptops and/or PCs available for use by students.
