Chronology
2005

The second UK series of The X Factor ran from 20 August to 17 December 2005.[1] All three judges — Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh — returned for the series, quashing rumours that Osbourne and Walsh might not return for financial reasons. Kate Thornton also returned as host. 75,000 people auditioned for the second series, which saw Shayne Ward declared winner, with Louis Walsh emerging as the winning mentor.

On the back of their performances and popularity in the competition, Shayne Ward (winner), Andy Abraham (runner-up), Journey South (3rd place) and Maria Lawson (8th place) landed recording contracts. 5th place finisher Chico Slimani, released a single which topped the UK Singles Chart.

The second series was longer than the first, with seven acts in each of the three categories going to the judges' homes, and twelve acts in the finals instead of nine.

On the episode broadcast on 24 September 2005, the mentoring selection was made, with Cowell in charge of Groups, Osbourne looking after the Over-25s and Walsh managing the 16–24s. The Boot Camp stages were shown on 1 October 2005, and those who got through were taken to the "judges' homes". It was at this stage where viewers were first introduced to future winner Alexandra Burke, who would miss out in this series but would be successful at making it into the finals three years later in the fifth series, which she went on to win.

The live shows began on 15 October 2005, and the final was broadcast live on 17 December 2005.

Louis Walsh had the casting vote, and chose to eliminate Maria Lawson. Sharon Osbourne accused him of being part of the "Irish Mafia" (since both he and the Conway Sisters are Irish). There was also talk that Simon Cowell wished he had eliminated the Conway Sisters, as he felt they wouldn't have a chance to win and that Lawson had more talent. It was also stated that he felt Lawson's was the first elimination that the public would disagree with.

  • Sharon Osbourne: Nicholas Dorsett

"It's Chico Time" was the first song to be written and composed especially for the show, by Slimani himself. It was released as a single in 2006 and got to number 1 in the UK Singles Chart.

With Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell both, as expected, supporting their own acts, the casting vote fell to Sharon Osbourne. After a lengthy pause Osbourne decided to eliminate Nicholas Dorsett. Osbourne declined to give a reason for her decision, but earlier in the show she had commented (as had Cowell) that Dorsett's singing was out of tune.

Following the show, rumours circulated that judge Louis Walsh had quit after being humiliated by fellow judges Sharon Osbourne and Simon Cowell due to the media outrage at his choice to eliminate Maria Lawson. Walsh told The Sun on November 23, 2005, "I’ve been totally humiliated and undermined by both of them. This has caused me nothing but stress. The final straw was Sharon with the water and being booed by the audience and then Simon Cowell saying I was an idiot and stupid... I’ve had enough. I’m going back to Dublin. I’m not putting up with it any more." Judge and creator of the show Simon Cowell apparently "begged" Walsh to come back.

In the event Walsh did turn up for the next show; it was stated that he had indeed quit midweek but had been persuaded to return. He explained how he had felt he could not take the pressure any more, and denied that the episode was a publicity stunt.

Order Artist Song (original artists) Results

5 Brenda Edwards "I Will Always Love You" (Dolly Parton/Whitney Houston) Safe
6 Journey South "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" (U2) Safe
Judges' votes to eliminate
  • Sharon Osbourne: The Conway Sisters
  • Simon Cowell: The Conway Sisters
  • Louis Walsh did not need to vote as there was a majority.

For the only time on any X Factor series to date (as of series 5), a judge made an unforced decision to eliminate one of their own acts: Simon Cowell voted to send home The Conway Sisters rather than Sharon Osbourne's contestant Chico Slimani. Osbourne had already supported her own act and Walsh did not get the opportunity to vote. Cowell said that both acts deserved to be in the bottom two, but felt Slimani had an entertainment value. (On November 5, both the bottom two acts were Walsh's, leaving him no choice but to send one of them home.)

[edit] 3 December 2005

Order Artist First song (original artists) Second song (original artist) Results
1 Journey South "Bad Day" (Daniel Powter) "Candle in the Wind" (Elton John) Safe

3 Brenda Edwards "I'm Outta Love" (Anastacia) "I'll Never Love This Way Again" (Dionne Warwick) Safe
4 Shayne Ward "Take Your Mama" (Scissor Sisters) "Careless Whisper" (George Michael) Safe
5 Andy Abraham "Easy Lover" (Phil Collins & Philip Bailey) "When I Fall in Love" (Nat King Cole) Safe

For the first time in the series, it was the viewers' votes alone that decided who left the competition. The results were, as usual, announced in no particular order, and at one stage in the voting period there was only 1% between the acts with the lowest number of votes. Chico Slimani ended up being eliminated, and performed "Time Warp" again as his final performance.

Order Artist First song (original artists) Second: Christmas song (original artists) Third song (original artists) Fourth song (new single) Results
1 Journey South "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" (Elton John) "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" (John Lennon and Yoko Ono) "Let It Be" (The Beatles) N/A (Eliminated after third performance) Third Place

3 Shayne Ward "If You're Not the One" (Daniel Bedingfield) "When a Child is Born" (Johnny Mathis) "Over the Rainbow" (Judy Garland) "That's My Goal" Winner

In the final of series 2, each of the three finalists had to sing up to four songs: one of their own choice, a Christmas song, a song they had sung earlier in the finals, and the new song "That's My Goal" — a version of which, recorded by the eventual winner, would be released to vie for the Christmas number one spot. (In the event, Shayne Ward's version did indeed make Christmas number one.)

Some of the more memorable acts that did not make it to the live shows also returned to sing "My Way." The show's oldest contestant was among them.
