Tirumangalam is a city and municipality in the Madurai District of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The area of the municipality is 10.70 km2, and it contains 27 wards. The main functions of the municipality are to provide basic amenities and implement development.
The population of the town increased 50% between 1991 and 2001. The floating population of the town exceeds the permanent population. The town area is being developed continually. Many people from southern Tamil Nadu pass through the town. The Temple City Madurai, near Tirumangalam, is a cause of the town's development.

The latitude and longitude of this town is 9°91’ N and 77°98’E respectively[1] and the mean sea level (MSL) is 164.150m. The town is situated on the banks of river Gundar, a distributary of river Vaigai. The average maximum and minimum temperatures are of 39°C and 27 °C. The town gets major rainfall during the south west monsoon period. The average annual rainfall being received in the town is 40.95 cm.

As of 2001[update] India census,[2] Tirumangalam had a population of 43,372. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Tirumangalam has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 85%, and female literacy is 75%. In Tirumangalam, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

It is also known that the mangalyam for Lordess Meenakshi of Madurai was designed and done in Tirumangalam, so the name Tiru+Mangal(y)am came. In other way, it is said that when lord Murugan married Theivanai in Thiruparankundram (nearest to Tirumangalam), the "Tirumangalyam" was made here and hence the name came.

The Mariamman Temple located here is very famous, and the Devi at the Patrakali Amman temple is believed to be highly powerful. Every year, in the Tamil month of Vaikasi, a 13-day festival is celebrated, "Vaikasi thiruvizha", along with daily pujas and exhibitions.

Tirumangalam town generates 17.00 MT of Solid Waste per day at a rate of 325 gm per capita per day. Out of this nearly 17.00 MT of the Solid Waste being collected, transported and disposed daily. The efficiency of the present mechanism can able to collect 100% of the total waste generated in the town. The Urban Local Body also carries out weekly mass waste cleaning programme to clear the left out wastes by utilizing extra vehicle trips in the town. The total garbage collected constitutes 48% of the domestic wastes, 42% commercial wastes and 10% of construction wastes. The Municipality has been divided in to 2 sanitary division, each division is managed by a sanitary inspector. 82 sanitary workers and 12 Self Help Group sanitary Workers are engaged for sweeping, drain cleaning. Transportation of garbage door to door to collection and segregation of solid waste management works.
Average of 17 M.T. of mixed waste is collected daily and dumped in the Rajapalayam Main Road for manure preparation. The process and disposal of waste compost dumping yard details: Karisalpatti Village area in Acres 5.20 acres (21,000 m2) and distance from center of the town is 1.0 K.M.
Segregation of Waste at Source
Each and every household person is instructed by the Urban Local Body to maintain separate baskets for segregation of waste as degradable and non-degradable. The residents are using separate baskets for segregating the waste and keep the baskets in front of their houses for easy handling of the conservancy worker.

4 numbers of deep bore wells fitted with Power Pumps are used for pumping and stored in Overhead tanks. The quantity of water pumped from the local source is 0.65 mld. and it is used for drinking purpose.

Treatment and Transmission
The drinking water drawn from the Vaigai River is through infiltration well. The water pumped from these wells are collected in a collection well. The collected water is conveyed through pumping main and stored at overhead tanks in various places of the town. Chlorination is made in the overhead tank itself and supplied to the public.
Water Quality
The treated water sample test for the town indicates that the PH value (6.0) is below the permissible limits of 6.5 to 8.5 for the drinking purpose. And the turbidity level of NTU against the norms of 10 NTU indicates (yellow in color) , which is normally allowed for the drinking purpose; otherwise the water is very safe in quality.
Storage and Distribution System
The water is drawn both through pumping and gravity methods from the sources and transmitted to the overhead tanks located at various zones. Then the water is distributed to the local supply through individual service connections and public stand posts located at the various locations in the town.
For the purpose of storage and wider coverage, the town is sub-divided into 7 major zones. The storage capacity of the 7 tanks is 2.2 mld. The total quantity of water pumped from the source is 2.8 mld and distributed to the local supply sources is 0.65 mld is also supplied to the local supply daily.
The Water supply during the summer season is poor due to non-availability of water in te Vaigai River. In that period, the quantity of water supply is only 0.5 mld.
House Service Connections
At present, the Tirumangalam Municipality has provided 3023 individual connections, of which 95% connections are domestic and 5% connections are non-domestic connections. Nearly, 84 Public Fountains are provided to supply protected water supply in the town. The inhabitants mainly rely on municipal water supply; therefore the demand for individual connections is high in the town. However, water supply improvement scheme is executed by TWAD Board and trial run supply is now supplied to the public. So, the water supply position in the town is good. In general, the protected water supply distribution system covers 98% of the total population at the rate of 75 litres per capita per day. It is estimated that nearly 2% of the public are not covered by the piped water distribution system and Tanker lorry is used to that area.
Distribution Network
The existing distribution system comprises distribution network from the service reservoirs to the individual house service connections and public fountains which covers total municipal road length (40.340 km) in the town. At present, the water is distributed for duration of 2 hours daily.
Demand and Supply
The overall demand and supply of water in Tirumangalam town indicates that the existing supply of 3.45 MLD is not adequate for the present population.

Existing Situation
There is under ground drainage system in Tirumangalam in one third of the town. The main mode of individual disposal in the town is through septic tanks, low Cost Sanitation units and through public conveniences. A phenomenal 54% of the population do not have access to safe disposal systems. Fifty six percent of the population has resorted to private arrangements, in the form of septic tanks.

Tirumangalam Municipality maintains 47.56 km of various category of roads and 301 streets. Usilampati Road and Madurai – Kanyakumari Road are maintained by State Highways and National Highways. Some of the main roads in the town require improvement. Because these roads are more incaution and pot holes. Nearly 58% of the roads are surfaced with Bituminous top, 13% of the roads are Cement and 7% of the roads are Cut Stone pavement. The remaining 24% of the roads are unsurfaced as WBM (Water Based Mud) and earthen.

Tirumangalam is lit by around 1375 streetlights. With 80% of the total lights, tube lights are predominant type of lights in the city. Further to improve the situation, municipality has initiated efforts to install around 500 streetlights.

In Tirumangalam Municipality, the under ground drainage system is covered for 16 wards. Storm water drains are constructed for the remaining portion of the town. Pumping station is maintaining for conveying the under ground drainage. The disposal point of Strom water drain is Karisalpatti river which is flowing southern side of the town. This pose a health and environmental hazard to the people. so, investigation for providing under ground drainage to the remaining wards are to be done by TWAD Board.

In Tirumangalam Municipality, Under Ground Drainage system is functioning for 16 Wards. Open drainage system has been covered for the remaining Wards as well as some of the portion of the existing wards.

The information provided in the above Table indicates that nearly 13.19 km of the roads are not provided with Strom water drainage facilities. Necessary Proposal has been prepared under IDSMT Scheme[14] and submitted to TUFIDCO,[15] Chennai. The estimate for construction of drain is Rs.31.30 lakhs.

The present bus stand (“C” grade) is situated in the heart of the town. The total area of the Bus Stand is 1.33 acres (5,400 m2). Tirumangalam Town is 16 km away from Madurai City and it is also situated on the National Highways Road of Madurai – Kanyakumari. So, the Bus Stand is insufficient for the buses and some of the buses are not entered into the Bus Stand. The Local Body has approved the proposal of New Bus Stand on the southern side of the town having extent of 5.5 acres (22,000 m2). A letter has been submitted to the Commissioner of Municipal Administration, Chennai for approval of new Bus stand proposal.

Tirumangalam Municipal Market is one of the important commercial centres, which support the daily needs of population residing in the town and surrounding rural areas. The Municipal market is located at Valyalkara street & Usilampatti Road, to available both Vegetable and Non-Vegetable shops.The commercial shops are concentrated along the Virudhunagar Road, Madurai Road, Usilampatti Road and Munsif Court Road. The existing market shops are need to be dismantled and new shops are to be constructed at Chinnakadai Veethi Market under IDSMT Project. The Urban Local Body also maintains one daily market at Chinnakadai Veethi and one Weekly Market at Sholavandan Road.

Regular bus services are available from all important cities of Tamil Nadu and all the Buses from Southern part of the State passes through Tirumangalam. Frequent city bus facilities are available from Tirumangalam to Madurai, Usilampatti, Virudhunagar, Sholavandan, Vadipatti etc.
The government transport operates TNSTC buses and private travels operates semi sleeper buses such as PARVEEN, KPN everyday to Chennai. There are also private bus services such as Velmurugan transports, Sri Jaya Vilas Transport and Sri Balaji Roadlines operated on daily basis to all major cities.
