Thomas D'Alesandro III (born July 24, 1929 in Baltimore) was Mayor of Baltimore from 1967 to 1971.[1] He is the brother of former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi,[2] and son of former Baltimore Mayor Thomas D'Alesandro, Jr. who served from 1947 to 1959.[1]
D'Alesandro attended Loyola College in Baltimore and studied law at the University of Maryland School of Law.[1] After military service he entered into politics, becoming president of the Baltimore City Council in 1963.[1] He ran for mayor in 1967 as a Democrat and easily defeated Republican challenger Arthur W. Sherwood.[citation needed]
His term as mayor was dominated by budgetary troubles and by the rioting which followed the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.
