Tideway Systems was a software company, founded in November 2002 by Richard Muirhead, that offered products for data center optimization, virtualization management, application availability and standards compliance, targeted toward enterprise customers.

In 2007, Tideway's flagship product Foundation v7.0 was released in what was the biggest upgrade ever to the product line. Through its ability to identify patterns, it automatically models and maps an IT infrastructure, connecting the technology layers in a way that is relevant to both the business and IT professionals – from business applications thru virtualized environments to switches and the dependencies that exist in between.

In early 2008, Tideway launched Configipedia, a community website for IT professionals, where information and discussion related to managing complex IT infrastructures can be found. Tideway staff make regular contributions to the site.

Tideway's customers included JPMorgan Chase, Dresdner Kleinwort, Linklaters, Wachovia, and numerous other Fortune 500 companies who use Foundation to automate and remove risk from their IT infrastructure.

In October 2009, Tideway was acquired by BMC Software. In an interview following the acquisition, a BMC spokesperson stated, "This [acquisition] gives our customers the capability to really see and understand what they have. It sounds simple, but it's not. Tideway's solutions lets them characterize their environment and view the full landscape of their IT estate. As more and more customers are consolidating their datacenters and looking into cloud-based applications, it's increasingly important to understand how these applications relate to business services and what components are needed to support them."
