Dr. Tom Hayhurst was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on July 5, 1942. He grew up in Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and Chicago, IL. He is married to Judy Hayhurst. He and his wife have two grown daughters, Anne and Susan. The Hayhursts have been members of the First Presbytarian Church of Fort Wayne since 1972.
[edit] Education and Military Service
Dr. Tom Hayhurst graduated from Indiana University at Bloomington in 1964. He graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine at Indianapolis in 1967 with an MD. He completed an Internal Medicine Residency and Pulmonary-Critical Care Fellowship training at Indiana University Medical Center (Indianapolis, IN), Grady Memorial Hospital/Emory University (Atlanta, GA), and Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH)
A Vietnam-era veteran, Dr. Tom Hayhurst served as a Capt->Major, in the United States Air Force. From 1969-1971, he served as General Medical Officer on active duty at various military installations across the United States.
[edit] Medical Career and Civic Awards
From 1974-2005 Dr. Hayhurst practiced medicine as Pulmonary-Critical Care specialist at Indiana Medical Associates in Fort Wayne. He currently serves as Medical Director of the Tuberculosis Control Division of the Infectious Disease Center, a part of the Fort Wayne-Allen County (IN) Health Department.
He has served as a clinical Assistant Prof. of Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine and is a member of the Boards of Arts United, Arthritis Foundation, Indiana High Speed Rail Assoc., and Invent Tomorrow. Dr. Tom Hayhurst is also a founding member of Veterans for Better Health Care, the Wolf Lake Free Health Clinic (Wolf Lake, IN), the pulminary clinic at Matthew: 25 Free Health and Dental Clinic in Fort Wayne and the Northeast Indiana Passenger Rail Association.
A recipient of numerous awards and recognition, Dr. Hayhurst was awarded the "Americanism Award for Outstanding Service and Leadership" by the Allen County (IN) Council of Veterans in both 2005 and 2006 as well as the Indiana Public Health Assoc. Local Elected Official Award in 1999.
[edit] Fort Wayne City Council
From 1996-2008 Dr. Hayhurst served on the Fort Wayne City Council. He represented the 4th District of Fort Wayne, which now includes the annexted potions of Aboite Township, in rural Allen County.
[edit] 2006 Congressional campaign
Dr. Hayhurst won the Democratic primary election over Rev. Kevin Boyd on 2 May 2006. Dr. Tom Hayhurst was defeated by Mark Souder in by a 54-46% margin, the closest in Souder's congressional career. Dr. Hayhurst raised over $500,000 in comparison to Souder's $600,000.
Key issues during Dr. Tom Hayhurst's 2006 congressional campaign were job creation, affordable health care and veterans services in his bid to unseat Rep. Mark Souder, R-Fort Wayne [1].
Dr. Hayhurst filed a report with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) terminating his campaign committee on 29 December 2006. Dr. Hayhurst chose not to file as a candidate for Congress in 2008.

On August 15, 2009, the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette reported that Hayhurst will again challenge Mark Souder. On October 15, 2009, Dr. Hayhurst released his fundraising amounts; showing him comprable to Mark Souder's total raised.
