Toponymie générale de la France (General Toponym of France, TGF for short) are several books separated in four volumes. It was published by Ernest Nègre. The book is published at Librarie Droz in Geneva, Switzerland. It is known as Étymologie de 35.000 noms de lieux (Etymology of 35,000 place names) and is about all the origin of place names and communes and historic communes across France.
Organization:
- The TGF consists of three volumes and a fascicule.
- The pagine of four publication and continue to total 1,871 pages.
- The division is in paragraphs and it contains 31,150 paragraphs in total.
- Volume I – Pre-Celtic, Celtic and Roman names. - Page numbers: 1 - 704 ; §§ 1 - 11862. Volume published in 1990
- Volume II - Non-Roman and dialectic names. - Pages 714 - 1381 §§ 12001 - 25617. Volume published in 1991
- Volume III - Dialectis and French names. Pages 1400 - 1852 ; §§25618 - 31150. Volume published in 1998.
The third volume features an indes (pages 1147 - 1846). - Errata and addenda in three volumes. Pages 1856 - 1871 ; comes with new paragraphs. Published in 1998

These French communes, other than their INSEE codes and its postal code is attributed in a new number (§) by E. Nègre.
