Introduced in April 2006, the Toshiba HD-A1 was the first HD DVD player released to the retail market. It was superseded 7 months later by the Toshiba HD-A2. Toshiba was able to bring the HD-A1 to the market so early by using a standard PC architecture (Pentium IV CPU, Intel 82854 (GMCH) chipset), 2 FPGAs totalling 2.5 million gates, a CPLD and other off-the-shelf components.[1]
