National Institute of Technology, Agartala was founded as Tripura Engineering College in 1965 and upgraded to NIT in 2006.[1]

The College was started with courses in three traditional branches of engineering, namely Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. It was initially affiliated to the University of Calcutta and had the same curriculum structure and examination system as of Bengal Engineering College, the other institute affiliated to the University. After the establishment of Tripura University, the college was affiliated to it. After the enactment of the NIT Act the institute has become an "Institute of National Importance" and will shift to a new campus presently under construction.[2]

The institute has a vibrant GNU/Linux Users' Group. The college is also organising its tech-fest, Aayam '09 from 13-15 November, 2009
