The Tsankov Kamak Hydroelectric Power Plant is an arch dam and hydroelectric power plant on the Vacha River in Tsankov Kamak, Bulgaria. Construction of the power plant started on 29 April 2004 and was complete in 2008.[1]
The power plant has 2 individual turbines with a nominal output of around 40 MW and total capacity of 80 MW.[2] It will produce 185 GWh of electric power per year
The project is highly controversial because of costs and possible corruption. The plant was originally to cost €220 million; however, the costs are almost doubled. The main reason was construction of a €114.5 million 22-kilometre (14 mi) road between the towns of Devin and Mihalkovo.[3]
The project is financed by export and commercial credits.€220 million is covered by an export credit, guaranteed by Oesterreichische Kontrolbank Aktiengellschaft. The commercial credits are provided by VA TECH Finance, Bank Austria Creditanstalt, BNP Paribas Fortis, Raiffeisen Zentralbank, Société Générale, and Credit Suisse First Boston.
