Unione Sportiva Sanremese Calcio 1904 commonly referred to as U.S. Sanremese Calcio or simply Sanremese is an Italian association football club, based in Sanremo, Liguria.

The team in season 2010-11 plays in Lega Pro Seconda Divisione group A.

[edit] From 1904 to 1987

The club was founded in 1904 as US Sanremese 1904, but the football team was founded only in 1911.[1] The US Sanremese Calcio 1904 was born by the merger of the first two local teams: the Ausonia and the Speranza.

The team played three seasons in Serie B from 1937-38 to 1939-40[2] when they were relegated in Serie C. In the 1937-38 season gets the 9th place in Serie B that is the best result ever in club history.

It's the only Italian team to have played in every championship of Serie C in a sole national division from 1952-53 to 1957-58.[3]

The team from 1977-78 to 1978-79 came from Serie D to Serie C1.[4] The club played seven consecutive seasons in Serie C1 from 1979–80, when it achieved a historic 4 th place, to 1985-86 when they retreated in Serie C2 and the next year in Serie D.

[edit] Anglo-Italian Cup

In the season 1980-81 it played the Anglo-Italian Cup, called in this year Talbot Challenge Cup. The team won 3-1 with Hungerford Town and 2-1 with Bridgend Town, draw 2-2 with Oxford City[5] and lost 1-0 with Poole Town. It ranked third in the group with 7 points, dominated by Modena then won the competition.

On the summer 1987 the company fell after 83 years of life because of the large debts.[6]

The club was refounded in 1987 allocating by the Terza Categoria as Sanremese Football Club 1904

On 1992 with the merger with Sanremo 80, it filming the historic name of U.S. Sanremese Calcio 1904. .[7]

[edit] Eccellenza

In the league 1991-92 and 1995-96 it wins the regional Eccellenza Liguria gaining promotion in Serie D and the 1995-96 Regional Coppa Italia Liguria:.[note 1]

[edit] Between Serie C2 and Serie D

On the season 1997-98 won the Serie D and lost in the final scudetto with the Giugliano. The team played two seasons in Serie C2 from 1998-99 to 1999-2000 when it retreated to Serie D.[8]

The club played four seasons in Serie D from 2000-01 to 2001-04 when was admitted to Serie C2.[9]

The team played three seasons in Serie C2 from 2004-05 to 2006-07 when it retreated to Serie D.

On the season 2005-06 lost the final Coppa Italia Serie C with the Gallipoli lose away 1-0 and at home wins 2-1.[10]

From November 2007, most of the players leave the team, become in the meantime USD Sanremese 1904, which was in strong crisis of liquidity, for non-payment of wages, thus leading to relegation from the Serie D.[note 2]

On 10 July 2008 the club was declared inactive to the FIGC after being refused entry to the League of Eccellenza, because of the large debts.

In summer 2008, the last president Carlo Barillà refounded the team with the same name of USD Sanremese 1904, that played in the season 2008-09 in Seconda Categoria.[11]

[edit] A new Sanremese (2009–2011)

On 4 August 2009 the Ospedaletti-Sanremo, just promoted from the Promozione Ligure girone A, after the agreement with Carlo Barillà for the cessation of the homonymous team that he was founded, changes name in USD Sanremese Calcio 1904: so the company's family Del Gratta is the only legitimate heir of the old society.

[edit] Eccellenza 2009-10

In the league 2009-10, coached by Giancarlo "Carlo" Calabria Sanremese wins the regional Eccellenza Liguria gaining promotion in Serie D.[12] and the Regional Coppa Italia Liguria:. It eliminated in the Coppa Italia Dilettanti 2009-2010 from Bolzano, in the quarter-finals losing for 1-2 at home and equalizing 0-0 away.[13]

[edit] Lega Pro Seconda Divisione 2010-11

On 4 August 2010 became US Sanremese Calcio 1904 the team obtained the admission directly in Lega Pro Seconda Divisione group A for the league 2010/2011 consists of 17 teams.[14]

This season the managers of the team were:

  • Vincenzo Chiarenza[15] from the 6th to the 11th game getting 3 points in 6 matches;[16]
  • Claudio Pignotti, Vincenzo Stragapede and Roberto Sosa [note 3] for the next two games[note 4] getting a [17] point;[18]
  • Salvatore Mango[19] from the 15th game, when in his debut the club won 1-0 with the leader[20] Pro Patria,[21] to the 22nd match getting 5 points, with a victory in 8 games.[22]

Since the 23rd game, when the team wins the first match away [23] to San Bonifacio beating the Sambonifacese 1-0,[24] the new coach is Giancarlo "Carlo" Calabria.[25]

On 20 March 2011, in 27th match the team wins away to San Giusto Canavese 2-1 with the Canavese.[26]

In 29th week the club wins the third match away to Meda beating the Renate 1-0.[27]

On 1 May 2011, in 33rd game winning at home 3-2 with Rodengo Saiano avoids direct relegation to Serie D and can to save thanks to relegation play-out,[28] victorious against Sacilese Calcio.[29]

Calabria later have already coached this team, in the first five games getting only 2 points in 5 matches, since his return, has obtained 16 points, with four victories in 11 games:[note 5] thus gaining a total of 18 points in 16 matches.[15]

[edit] Playout and folding

The team is ranked in 16th place, with 5 victories, 12 draws and 15 defeats with 24 goals for and 38 against, for a total of 27 points, thus obtained:

  • at home : 2 victories, 9 draws and 5 defeats, for a total of 15 points
  • at away : 3 victories, 3 draws and 10 defeats, for a total of 12 points.

It is preceded of a place, for the direct games, from Sacilese Calcio, which was play the relegation play-out.[30]

The first match was at home on 22 May, the return away to Sacile on 29 May 2011.[31]

On 22 May 2011 Sanremese wins 2-1 against Sacilese:[32] in this game they expelled Bifini and the coach Calabria.[33]

On 29 May 2011 Sanremese equalizing 1-1 in Sacile[34] gets an incredible and very difficult safety,[35] in a season strongly conditioned by many problems is sports extra that sports, with the team promoted from Eccellenza that has strongly suffered the double jump of category, and so almost completely reconstructed in the market in January.[36]

On June 30, 2011, the society wasn't able to enter 2011–12 Lega Pro II division.

[edit] The owners Del Gratta arrested resign

After the arrest, of 15 March 2011,[37] of Marco and his father Riccardo Del Gratta, respectively President and Director General,[38] the company was temporarily administered by Giancarlo Lupi, a brother-in-law of the President Marco Del Gratta.[39]

They are accused of being the beneficiaries of the alleged threats and extortions to players of Sanremese, so that the latter rescind the onerous contracts signed in the summer.[40]

Since March 16, 2011, after the resignations of the owners Marco and Riccardo Del Gratta,[41] the new CEO is Giuseppe Fava, already responsible for of youth sector.[42]

The club plays at the Stadio Comunale[43] of Sanremo, site in Corso Mazzini 15, which has the grass field and a capacity of around 4,000 seats:
