The UMKC Kangaroos, sometimes called the Kansas City Kangaroos,[n 1] are the 16 intercollegiate teams representing the University of Missouri–Kansas City that compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. UMKC currently competes in The Summit League in all sports, but on February 7, 2013, UMKC notified the Summit league that it had accepted an invitation to join the Western Athletic Conference.[1]

The name was chosen in the 1930s for the school's debate team, following the acquisition of two baby kangaroos by the Kansas City Zoo.[2]

  1. ^ Although the school consistently brands itself for athletic purposes as "UMKC", its primary conference, The Summit League, consistently uses "Kansas City".
