[edit] History

The university occupies a 2,100-acre (8.5 km2) campus in the Warin Chamrap district of Ubon Ratchathani Province, approximately 15 kilometers south of Ubon Ratchathani city. It has around 13,000 students in 10 faculties and 1 College.

The university's former English name, Ubon Ratchathani University, was mandated by its former president Prakob Wirojanagud who disliked the officially approved Royal Institute romanisation system that is used by the government to render the name of the province and city as Ubon Ratchathani. Staff and students protested against this alternative spelling as confusing for foreigners at whom romanization is aimed. The university returned to using the romanization in early 2010.

The university has students from all over Thailand, but most of its students are from the Isan region and from the southeast of Isan in particular.

[edit] 2008 Sex-for-Grades Scandal

− In July 2008, 41-year old Assistant Professor Chakkarit Uttho (Jakkrarit Ut-tho) was arrested on sexual molestation charges, after a third-year 21-year old female student accused him of offering her good grades in return for sex. Chakkarit had been on probation before for student molestaiton, but lack of evidence forced the university to drop an investigation. The student, who had been failing her course, pretended to accept the professor's offer, but acting upon instructions from the police, secretly filmed him with her mobile phone camera. [1]

[edit] 2011 Campus Murder

− On Friday 11 February 2011, Pratchayanan Niyom, a 24-year old student at the university, was drinking at a restaurant in front of the university with a number of friends including Ranger Supachoke Pimpila. They got into an argument with another group of students, but when they left the restaurant, they claimed the other group shot at them. While driving home they spotted the other students still drinking at a roadside stall. Supachoke told Pratchayan to slow down, and shot at the other group with an M16 assault rifle. Three students were killed and another was injured. Police arrested the two suspects over the next couple of days. The university subsequently paid 50,000 baht to each of the families of the students who were killed.[2]
