Uijeongbu (Korean pronunciation: [ɰidʑʌŋbu]) is a city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea.

The city is located just north of Seoul with many U.S. and Korean military bases for the defense of the Korean capital. The U.S. Second Infantry Division has established its headquarters in the city with main troops deployed in Dongducheon City. There are several mountains such as Mt. Dobong (Dobongsan), Mt. Surak, Mt. Soyo nearby, which are popular with residents living in Seoul Metropolitan area for climbing as leisure activity.

Despite it being known for its military presence, the area has boomed into a satellite community of Seoul and all that comes with it. Which means shopping, cinemas, restaurants and bars, PC bangs, DVD Bangs, etc. In addition to US personnel, English hagwons have surfaced and as a result, has generated an expat community of English teachers.

In the TV series M*A*S*H, this city (then just a village) served as the home of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. Joey Lawrence's character on Melissa & Joey, Joe Longo, was born in an unspecified U.S. Army hospital in the city.

VAL network map

A VAL driverless metro system, Uijeongbu LRT, is in development with one elevated line, 11.067 km long, covering 14 stations.[1] It is commonly called the "U Line", and is currently (February 2012) being tested without passengers.

Uijeongbu is served by the Seoul Metropolitan Subway's Line 1. The five stations within the city boundaries are Nogyang, Ganeung, Uijeongbu, Hoeryong and Mangwolsa. It takes around 40 minutes to reach Uijeongbu from central Seoul by subway.

Extensive bus routes cover north-eastern Gyeonggi-do. There are three basic kinds: Ilban Bus, normal bus; Jwaseok Bus, larger and slightly more expensive; and Maeul Bus, "village bus", a smaller bus with fewer seats. An intercity bus station is available for longer distances. Airport limousine buses run frequently to both Incheon and Gimpo airports.
