Uligamu or Uligan (Dhivehi: އުލިގަން) is one of the inhabited islands of Haa Alif Atoll and geographically part of the Ihavandhippolhu Atoll in the Maldives.
Uligamu is an outpost in the northwest Indian Ocean; it's the final stop most people make on the way from Thailand before they enter the Gulf of Aden or sail directly up the Red Sea. One of the major sources of income for the islanders is by selling souvenirs and ship provisions for passing yachtsmen. Maldives made history with the implementation of the world’s first hybrid AC Coupled Renewable Energy Micro Grid in Uligan that will help reduce the dependence on fossil fuel and toxic emissions, which in turn will contribute to reduce the effects of global warming. In 2008 MTDC ( the Maldivian Public company ) started to build a 4 star 50 rooms and 100 beds resort in Uligamu. But recently project was stopped. A development budget of USD 16 million was estimated for Uligamu Development Project; consisting of USD 6 million equity finance and USD 10 million debt finance. As of today, USD 6.5 million worth of investment had been made towards property development. However, further development is pending on availibilty of loan finance, which has not materilized as expected due to the daunting global economic crisis. Therefore many employees had been cut off from the project and among these employees are almost Uligamu people.
