The Commonwealth's current delegation (as of November 2013)

Since the 1st United States Congress in 1789, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has sent biennial congressional delegations to the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. Each state elects two Senators statewide to serve for six years, and their elections are staggered to be held in two of every three even-numbered years—Massachusetts's Senate election years are to Classes I and II. Before the Seventeenth Amendment took effect in 1914, Senators were elected by the state legislature, the Massachusetts General Court. Members of the House of Representatives are elected to two-year terms, one from each of the Commonwealth's nine congressional districts.

The Commonwealth's longest-serving U.S. Senator was Ted Kennedy, who served nearly 47 years (1962–2009); its longest-serving U.S. Representative was John William McCormack, who served about 42 years (1928–71). Both were Democrats. The current delegation to the 113th Congress consists of 11 Democrats (as of December 2013). The dean of the current delegation is U.S. Senator Ed Markey who has served in Congress since 1976.

United States House of Representatives[edit]

Article I of the United States Constitution allocated 8 seats to Massachusetts. After the 1790 Census, Massachusetts had 14 seats. From 1793 to 1795, Massachusetts apportioned 13 of its 14 seats into 4 districts, elected on a general ticket; the remaining seat was elected At-large. In 1795, Massachusetts returned to single-representative districts, abolishing the at-large district and plural districts.
