The Autonomous University of Chihuahua (in Spanish: Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua, UACH) is a Mexican public university based in the city of Chihuahua, Chihuahua, but with several campuses across the state. In December 8, 1954 the State Legislature, being Governor of Oscar Soto Maynez, issued the decree 171 with which founded the Autonomous University of Chihuahua (UACh). UACh granted his autonomy in 1968 which granted the freedom to define its own curriculum and manage its own budget without interference from the government.

Literary and Scientific Institute of Chihuahua

It was founded on March 19, 1835, in order to promote cultural development in the emerging city of Chihuahua, offered to the community studies of Latin and Spanish grammar. In the beginning was 21 students, between the years 1835 and 1900 around 996 people received education in their classrooms.

The demand for education in the state grew, so that many students had to leave the entity to Mexico City for their studies and many of them stayed in that city to file for that reason the State lost with this important personalities.

The building occupied by the Literary and Scientific Institute is now employing Rectory of the Autonomous University of Chihuahua (UACh).

Creation of the Autonomous University of Chihuahua

Since the demand of the school population for open spaces and sufficient for education, the December 8, 1954 the State Legislature, being Governor of Oscar Soto Maynez, issued the decree 171 with which founded the Autonomous University of Chihuahua (UACh).

In its early years it gave school serves a population that barely a thousand in the enrollment of each school year. It was the time when Mexico's total population stood at only 26 million people living and on our state three quarters of a million. Back then, the total enrollment of higher education in the country were 29,000 students.

UACH began with schools of Medicine, Engineering, Law, Physical Education and Pharmacy.

In September 1956 the ranching school was founded, which is the Faculty of Animal Science today.

The School of Accounting and Administration, which precedent was the School of Business Brokers, was created on December 3, 1958, as School of Commerce and Administration. Today is the School of Accounting and Administration.

In 1960, the Central Library was founded with 2 000 353 volumes. That same year, the quartet was created wish turn to UACH symphony orchestra today.

In July 1963, was founded the School of Philosophy, Literature and Journalism, history of what is now the Faculty of Arts.

On July 22, 1967, the university founded the School of Agronomy. Later moved to Delicias for being the largest agricultural state. Today is the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry.

In 1968 it acquired its autonomy and became the Autonomous University of Chihuahua.

The School of Public Administration and Political Science, located in Ciudad Juarez, was born in 1968. Today is the Faculty of Political and Social Science.

In 1974 the fruit farmer Engineering started, creating the school of frut engineering, which became independent from the School of Chemistry and rises to the rank of Faculty in 1985.

Born with the university, the Department of Fine Arts, now the Institute. The School of Nursing and Obstetrics in 1976 raises its level to degree and soon becomes faculty.

On May 12, 1978, the construction of the university gym begans and opened on October 2, 1980. Architectural work built entirely by engineers UACH graduates.

In 1991, School of Dentistry in the city of Chihuahua and the School of International Economics located in the city of Hidalgo del Parral were created

The current campus has an area of 25 hectares., Which originally formed part of an area of 107 hectares. Elias Brothers who donated to the State Government, in order to build a sports and recreation park in memory of his mother, Mrs. Emilia M. de Elías. These lands are now occupied by the University, the Sports City, Chihuahua Institute of Technology, the School Carmen Romano de Lopez Portillo, the School of Special Education and the former Pemex storage facility.[3]

Sports [edit]

The University has a football team: Aguilas UACH, which has on 2 occasions Trophy National Conference ONEFA. They also have a soccer team, called Dorados Fuerza UACH, that plays in the Segunda División de México. In addition, other sports, basketball, martial arts, archery and athletics.
