The University of Antwerp (Dutch: Universiteit Antwerpen) is one of the major Belgian universities located in the city of Antwerp. The name is sometimes (unofficially) abbreviated as UA.

History[edit]

The university was founded in 2003 after the merger of the three universities that were previously known as RUCA (State University Centre Antwerp), UFSIA (University Faculties Saint Ignatius Antwerp) and UIA (University Institution Antwerp). Hence, the university's roots go back to 1852.

The University of Antwerp has approximately 14,000 students and is still increasing, which makes it the third largest university in Flanders. Over 1,000 of these students (exchange students not included) are from foreign countries, with a majority of EU countries. In order to face the challenges posed by the internationalization of European education and research, the University is part of the Antwerp University Association (AUHA).

Campuses[edit]

The four campuses are situated in the historic city centre and in the green belt to the south of the city.

  • City Campus: Prinsstraat 13, 2000 Antwerp
  • Campus Middelheim (Rector and central administration) : Middelheimlaan 1, 2020 Antwerp
  • Campus Groenenborger: Groenenborgerlaan 171, 2020 Antwerp
  • Campus Drie Eiken: Universiteitsplein 1, 2610 Antwerp

Campus Middelheim[edit]

Campus Middelheim is the name of the smallest of the campuses of the University of Antwerp. It houses the departments of computer science and mathematics of the university, as well as several administrative departements.

History[edit]

Historically, the Middelheim campus was owned by the Koloniale Hogeschool, that bought the terrains in 1923. After a name-change in 1949 to UNIVOG (Universitair Instituut voor de Overzeese Gebieden) and some fusions with other schools, campus Middelheim eventually became the property of RUCA (Rijksuniversitair Centrum Antwerpen) in 1965. With the merger of all Antwerp university institutes in 2003, the campus became property of the University of Antwerp. A remainder of the colonial past of the campus can still be seen above the main entrance of the A building, where the Belgian colonial star is still depicted.

Campus Infrastructure[edit]

Photo of the main building (building A) of campus Middelheim

The A-building is the oldest building on campus (built in 1931 after a fire destroyed most other buildings on site). Today, it houses most of the administration of studies that are primarily lectured outside the Antwerp city campus.

The B-building houses university sport facilities, and is currently owned by Healthcity (former Sportopolis). The building houses a number of sport fields (badminton, squash) as well as fitness accommodations and a bar.

The C-building is an old colonial style building that houses the personnel departement of the university.

The D-building is a student dormitory for 129 students. It also houses the Atrium restaurant used by students and university personnel during lunch hours. As of end 2010, it was decided that this building will be torn down by the end of 2012 due to continued infrastructural problems with the building and the accompanying high maintenance costs.[1] A campaign against the demolishment of the building was started by students at the beginning of 2011,[2] and was reported on by several local media (ref).

The E-building functions as the home of the on-campus concierge. Also houses a meeting room for the sports- and studentcouncil of the university.

The G-building houses the university's departments of computer science and mathematics.
