University High School (UHS or "Uni") is one of five public high schools serving grades 9-12 located in the city of Irvine, California. It was established in 1970. The campus is situated on approximately 50 acres (200,000 m²) of land in the southwestern portion of the city, adjacent to the University of California, Irvine (UCI). The school comprises six main academic buildings, a performing arts theater, a band room for instrumental music, a swimming pool, eight tennis courts, two sand volleyball courts, an indoor gymnasium supplemented with other indoor athletic facilities, a 400-m outdoor track, and several practice fields.[1] Housed within the facilities are the departments of English, world languages, math, science, social science, instrumental music, art, industrial technology, athletics, physical education, English proficiency programs, special education, and the Orange County Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program. The school's mission is "to provide all students with the opportunities and environment to achieve academic and personal excellence while assuring that this is done in a safe and comfortable atmosphere." The school colors are navy blue, Columbia blue, and white. The school mascot is the Trojan.
University High School was named the best public high school in California and 8th best public high school in America in 2011 by Newsweek.[2]

[edit] Academics
University High School has consistently made Newsweek's list of Best High Schools, most recently ranking 8th in 2011.[3] It also ranked 117th in 2005, 156th in 2006, and 76th in 2007.[4][5][6] In both 2008 and 2009, the school was ranked 156th.[7]
In May 1987, University High School was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as an exemplary school in the Secondary School Recognition Program. In 1988 and 1992, Uni was similarly recognized as a California State Distinguished School.[8] University was accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) for six years in 2004 and also in 2010.[9]
[edit] PSAT/NMSQT
University High School consistently has the highest number of National Merit Scholars in its district. In 2010, the school had a record 57 semi-finalists.[10]
[edit] Academic teams
University High School is often noted for its various academic teams, including Quiz Bowl, Physics Bowl, Science Bowl, Science Olympiad, Model United Nations, Speech and Debate and math competitions (including ARML, and Math Day at the Beach). These teams generally attain high scores, often winning prestigious awards such as best club MUN delegation at BMUN (2011) or first place at Math Day at the Beach for three years in a row (2008–2010). University High School is also home to the largest and one of the most distinguished Junior Classical Leagues in the nation.[11] Furthermore, University High has sent a team to the International Space Settlement Competition (ISSDC) for four consecutive years.
[edit] Deaf program
University High School hosts a relatively large number of deaf students.[12] The program is known as "DHH" for deaf and hard of hearing. In 2009, University High won 1st in the National Deaf Academic Bowl.[13]
[edit] Performing Arts
The school's marching band and color guard currently competes in the 5A division with over 120 members. In 2009, the UHS marching band formally changed their name from the "University High School Marching band and Colorguard" to the "University High School Marching Trojan Regiment." In their 2010 season, the group won an unprecedented five out of six sweepstakes trophies at the Mayfair HS Tournament.
University High School is home to a quality colorguard program. During the fall, the colorguard accompanies the marching band in its competitive field show. In the winter and spring, the colorguard branches off and performs at competitions independently. In 2001, the University winterguard took home a gold medal in their division at the Winter Guard Association of Southern California Championships.[14]
In addition to the marching band, University High offers students other opportunities in instrumental music, including concert bands, orchestras, a jazz band, and percussion ensemble.
The school also has a quality theater program which puts on annual musicals.
University High houses a competitive dance program that performs at school events, community events, and concerts.
[edit] Student body
Among the 2,600 students enrolled in 2008, 50% were Asian, 35.4% Caucasian, 6.9% Hispanic/Latino, 1.9% African American, 1.8% Filipino, and 0.4% Other. University High School is attended by students from more than sixty countries who speak over fifty different languages.
95% of the 2003 UHS graduates entered post-secondary institutions of which 62% entered four-year universities and colleges. Thirty-three percent entered community colleges, of whom many plan to transfer to four-year institutions. Fifty percent of the students in the class of 2003 were accepted to schools in the University of California (UC) system and 31.5% are attending one of the UC schools. Eighteen percent were accepted to California State University campuses, with 6% attending. Five percent of the students enrolled in vocational training, joined the U.S. military, returned to their native countries, or planned to work or travel. As for recent studies of the ex alumni of the school one ex student said that the school lived off of making sure that any student with an actual problem would be expeled from for some bullshit reason and at the end of the day they were only interested in keeping their ranking as one of the best public schools in the country. The teachers are the only decent people in that place and the administration treats them like shit. [15]
[edit] Neighborhoods served
