Swimming at the University of Durham is operated predominately through Durham University Swimming Club (or DUSC). The club is made up of a wide selection of swimmers throughout the University from the various colleges, though is mainly aimed towards swimmers competing for the University. They compete every year in the British Universities and Colleges Sport Championships (or BUCS)[1] in both the Short Course and Long Course championships, both held at the international swimming pool Ponds Forge, Sheffield in November and December respectively. The club enjoys a reasonable degree of success at these events, where they often have a significant number of finalists, who compete directly against members of the British Swimming team, such as Liam Tancock (current world champion and world record holder),[2] as well as double Olympic Games Gold Medallist Rebecca Adlington.
The club also competes in the BUCS team championships,[3] where Durham 1 will compete in the Northern Division 1 (after winning promotion from Northern Division 2 in 2010) and the recently formed Durham 2, who in their debut season earned promotion into the Northern Division 2.

[edit] Club Information
DUSC is associated with Team Durham (formerly Durham University Athletic Union until a rebranding in 2006),[4] and receives funding as well as help in other areas from this organisation. It is also currently sponsored by the law firm CMS Cameron McKenna, whose name as a result appears on the club's poolside shirts and over club tops. Unlike many of its rivals, DUSC does not have access to a university owned pool, and instead train predominantly at the Durham City Council owned Freeman's Quay, which opened in 2008, as well as weekly sessions at Durham School. They also have access to gym facilities at the Graham Sports Centre at Maiden Castle. DUSC have recently been able to finance the services of part-time coaches, the first of which was Fred Kirby, who wrote the clubs sessions and appeared on poolside intermittently during the 2008-09 season. He was then replaced by Sunderland ASC coach Paul Hogg, who led weekly sessions on poolside. In November it was announced that Paul was unable to continue his position beyond the end of the month due to a new job offer from the Amateur Swimming Association, and he was replaced by Chris Leighton. The club's gym sessions are also monitored by employees of Team Durham.
The BUCS championships at Sheffield twice a year are the most significant event of the club's competitive calender. DUSC features prominently in these meets, both in the pool and on poolside. In the pool, the club's levels of performance have improved remarkably over the past two years with the arrival of more pool times at the new Freeman's Quay and professionally written sets from both Fred Kirby and Paul Hogg. This has resulted in a large amount of final placings and the majority of the club's records being broken.
DUSC are well known to make a strong presence on poolside, with a larger than most squad who prove to be arguably the most vocal at the meets. The club are also notoriously one of the most active banner-stealers, a tradition of stealing opposing teams' banners and giving forfeits to the bannerless teams, as well as wearing brightly coloured poolside tops with humorous slogans on either the front or back (for instance, the 2009 Long Course top was neon pink and mimicked the "fast swimming" and smiley face of the Loughborough University team, with a crying face and "slow swimming"). The latest top bore the words "The Harder You Stroke The Faster You Finish".
DUSC also partake in a large amount of socials, or nights out together as a means of increasing team spirit, as well as celebrating after competitions. The majority of these involve both the men and women, except for the Stag & Hen night, as well as occasions when the men have a "Steak & Beer" night whilst the women have a "Cake & Cocktail" night. In these cases, both parties still meet up at the final destination if not before. The men are often seen wearing a white sleeveless, DUSC tank top on socials, which are usually worn underneath another top and then exposed whilst in a club.
The Inter-Collegiate swimming competition, hosted at Durham School on two separate nights (one for Hill colleges, the other for Durham colleges on the Bailey), is also a regular annual event, with the winners receiving the Inter-College Cup.
[edit] History
The club has a vast and illustrious history that spans many years, tracing its origins back to the formation of the University in 1832. Notable former swimmers include the legendary Marc Hansen (who has since gone on to join the illustrious Loughborough University swimming team) and Chris Webber, both former captains of the team, who were instrumental in converting the culture and philosophy amongst the club, making it more success-orientated and socially appealing. Their efforts have helped to expand the member base and improve performances at BUCS. The club has also contained international swimmers who have competed in major international multi-sport games. Caroline Saxby competed for England at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, where she reached the final in the Women's 800m & 400m Freestyle, coming 6th and 7th respectively. Adam Jackson also competed for the Isle of Man in the 50m & 100m Breaststroke at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. The club also contained international multi-eventers, including former U23 European Duathlon Silver Medalist Matt Gunby, a member of the British Triathlon team, and Nick Zissler, who has represented Great Britain in Modern Pentathlon. The club also has two current British Senior Age Group Swimming Champions, James Benson (three-times British Champion in the 50m,100m & 200m Butterfly), and Alex Smith (200m Backstroke).
The 2009 BUCS Long Course Championships saw the emergence of the legendary Men's relay team who achieved nationwide renown amongst other University teams for there ability to compete against the Universities operating within the British Swimming Olympic Performance Squads. This team, consisting of Tom Bill, Graham Bruce, Marc Hansen and the controversial James Benson, achieved placings of 5th and 6th in the 4x100m Medley and 4x100m Freestyle teams respectively, and broke the University records in each event by considerable margins (their records still stand today). The great recent history of Men's Relay teams has continued, with Benson and Bill teaming up with Alex Smith and James Norman to achieve an impressive 4th place in the 4x50m Freestyle team at the 2010 Short Course Championships.
2009 also saw the arrival of the Durham B Team amongst the Team Swimming Championships. Starting in Northern Division 3 and captained by Tom Williams, the team made light of their underdog status to finish 4th out of 16 and qualify for the National Team Finals. The Original Durham Team, who were relegated from Northern Division 1 in 2008, were renamed Durham A, and came 2nd in Northern Division 2 (with the men gaining 166 out of 180 available points, the most in any league), and also qualified for the National Team Finals. In the first National Team Finals with two Durham teams, both gained promotion, with Durham A coming 4th in the Trophy Final (where they were the highest placed Northern Team), and Durham B finishing 5th in the Shield Final.

[edit] 2009-10
| Club Captain | James Benson |
|---|---|
| Vice Captain | Lucie Edmunds |
After the successes of the previous season and the notable improvements of many of the University records, the 2009-10 season started with a flourishing sense of optimism and expectation. Despite losing the services of influential, stalwart members such as former club captains Chris Webber and Marc “Mov” Hansen, as well as Vice Captain and Breaststroke finalist Louise Griffiths, the club still retained the core of the squad, in particular the strong 2nd year contingent. Added to this came a small but talented influx of freshers to bolster the squad, as well as a new training regime under the guidance of coach Paul Hogg, meaning DUSC left for the BUCS Short Course Championships in good spirits.
The weekend soon shaped up to be an epic one both on and off poolside. In the pool there were strong performances again from the Men’s relay team, missing out on the coveted top 8 position by only 0.09 seconds in the Freestyle, with the trimurti of Tom Bill, Captain James Benson and Graham Bruce again excelling in their respective events. Amongst the women, Annie Knapman quickly established herself as a star of the squad and lynchpin of the relay teams with a succession of classy swims, whilst Vikki Frith defied belief by swimming the 1500m and 800m in the same session. Henry Sage however stole the show, with his 100m Butterfly quickly engulfing a near legendary status as he proceeded to do what is now referred to simply as “doing a Sage”. Despite an impressive start, turning in a 28 for the first 50m, lactic acid took a fearsome grip of his arms, resulting in him coming back in a 51, much to the anguish yet at the same time sadistic laughter of his teammates.
The Long Course Championships in February was the clubs next port of call, with expectation again as high as ever. For the men, the three B’s Benson, Bill and Bruce continued to perform well, teaming up with Alex Smith to once again form a very competitive Men’s Relay team, although they again were just pipped to 8th, this time by 0.01. For the girls, with Annie Knapman absent through illness, the girls missed a standout performer, however Vikki Frith and Vicky Bradshaw stepped up when needed with some impressive shows of endurance, and Amber Bonshor continued to develop and improve her results.
Overall after both events the club, despite no outstanding results like the Men’s Relay team from a year earlier, showed strong all round improvement and certainly built on their performances in previous years. It was however, the BUCS Team Championships where everything came together for the club, seeing the arrival of a Durham B team and subsequent promotion of both teams from their respective divisions. The A team had high hopes coming into this tournament of promotion, and after easing through qualification held off the challenge of Sheffield Hallam to finish first out of the Northern teams. The B team, captained by Tom Williams, exceeded all expectations by gaining promotion at the first time of asking. This achievement was the result of strong team spirit and several fast swims, emphasised most by Henry Sage, who banished the memory of his nightmare 100m Butterfly to touch in a 1.04, improving by over 15 seconds and showing large amounts of character and resolve, something which the whole of the DUSC 2009-10 squad had in abundance.
[edit] Records
List of Records for both men and women, in both Short Course (25m) and Long Course (50m) pools.[5] 46 of the records are held by current members of DUSC. The majority of records are broken at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, and 58 of the current records were achieved at that pool, due to it being the host for the BUCS Long & Short Course Championships every year.
