The University of Sri Jayewardenepura(ශ්‍රී ජයවර්ධනපුර විශ්වවිද්‍යාලය in Sinhala) is one of the Universities in Sri Lanka. It is located in Gangodawila, Nugegoda, near Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, the capital city of Sri Lanka.

The University of Sri Jayewardenepura dates back to 1873, when the Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thero laid the foundation stone for the University as a pirivena (Institute of Buddhist and Oriental Studies) named Vidyodaya (meaning "awakening of knowledge"). It was built on land at Maligakanda, a Colombo suburb, with funds gifted by Andiris Perera Dharmagunawardhana.

In 1958, it was reconstituted as the Vidyodaya University of Ceylon by an Act of Parliament. Later, under the Universities Act of 1978, it was re-named as the "University of Sri Jayewardenepura" . in the new administrative capital of Sri Lanka. Its full-time student population is over 8,500,[1] enrolled in the faculties of Arts, Management Studies and Commerce, Applied Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Graduate Studies

The Postgraduate Institute of Management is a semi-autonomous body affiliated to the University. It promotes advanced education and professionalism in management in Sri Lanka through the provision of postgraduate instruction, training, research, and development in the various branches of management and administrative studies.

[edit] Background

The Department of Estate Management and Valuation was established in 1986 in the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce at the university as a fully-fledged department to conduct the B.Sc. (Special) Estate Management and Valuation four-year full time degree course.

The Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce of the University commenced this Degree course in 1973 as a separate unit in the Department of Business Administration until 1986. From the initial entry of 40 students in 1973 the average annual entry to the course is 50. Since the inception of the course more than 1000 students have successfully completed the degree by the year 2005.

The B.Sc. (Special) Estate Management and Valuation Degree is a professional course designed to cater the specific needs in the fields of Real Estate Valuation, Real Estate Management, Urban and Regional Planning and Housing in the Country. This degree program is the first land based professional course commenced at the University level in Sri Lanka and the sole degree program in the country in the field of real Estate Management and Valuation.

Separate building premises include lecture halls with facilities of multimedia and OHP. Therecis an IT resource centre, which provide IT trainng in addition to the main IT centre of the Faculty and a Reading Resource centre with a collection of material, in addition to the main campus library. Financial assistance is given by the EMV Alumni Association.
