The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee School of Education is an academic unit of the university. It offers five undergraduate majors, five masters, and 12 doctoral specializations. The graduate program at the School of Education was ranked as one of America’s Best by U.S. News and World Report; and UW–Milwaukee is cited among the top 3% of research universities by the Carnegie Foundation.

Although its primary mission is teacher education, the School of Education prepares students for a variety of careers in education, including teacher and school or community counselor, or as an educator working in non-school settings, such child care centers, social service agencies, business, government and industry. The school works with more than 200 area schools and agencies to provide students with hands-on experience, in addition to course work and research opportunities.

The School of Education places more teachers in jobs than any other university in the state. In all, more UWM graduates stay in Wisconsin than any other university in the state.

The School of Education offers the only four-year degree Interpreter Training Program in Wisconsin, preparing students to work with the deaf and hard of hearing. As of fall 2009, the school offered nine online or blended programs.

In the fall of 2008, 2,693 students were enrolled in the School of Education, with 639 students working in the initial teacher preparation programs. The school’s graduate programs enrolled 735 students, with the largest numbers in Educational Psychology, Adult Continuing Education, Education Leadership and Education Administration. There were 431 students in the school’s master’s programs, and 183 in the doctoral degree programs.

Enderis Hall at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee

[edit] Facility

The School of Education is located in the 11-story Enderis Hall in the heart of the UWM campus. Enderis Hall also houses the College of Health Sciences and the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare.

This building was named for Dorothy C. Enderis (1880-1952), an educator and director of the Division of Municipal Recreation and Adult Education of the Milwaukee Public Schools from 1920 to 1948. She graduated in 1901 from the two-year Milwaukee Normal School, where she served as assistant librarian from 1901 to 1909. She was appointed to federal committees by Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt (1942) and Harry Truman (1948), and was honored by five Wisconsin colleges and universities for her contributions to education.

[edit] History

The School of Education’s history is intertwined with the history of UWM. The school’s predecessor, Milwaukee Normal School, opened in 1885 to train teachers in downtown Milwaukee at 18th Street and Wells Avenue. In 1909, the Normal School moved to its new location, the Milwaukee Normal School Building (today’s Mitchell Hall on the UWM campus). The Normal School became Milwaukee State Teachers College, offering four-year degrees. In 1951, Milwaukee State Teachers College became Wisconsin State College (WSC), Milwaukee, with liberal arts degrees. WSC merged with UW Milwaukee Extension to form UWM.
