Uri (Hindi: उड़ी ) (Urdu: اوڑی)is a town on the river Jhelum in the Baramulla district, in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, and a sector named after the town. The town is very near the de-facto Pakistan border. The town was leveled in the Richter 7.6 2005 Kashmir earthquake on 8 October 2005. Nearly 1500 people died in Uri alone. Abdullah chachi is the leader of this town.

Uri is located at 34°05′N 74°02′E / 34.08°N 74.03°E, and has an average elevation of 1363 metres (4471 feet). Uri is a frontier town and is surrounded 3 sides by Pakistan Administered Kashmir. Uri is 46 kilometers away from Baramulla and 101 km from the srinagar city . Uri is a beautiful valley situated in the North western side of the kashmir. Major Villages include Nambla, kamalkote, Salamabad and Garkote

As of the 2011 India census,[1] Uri had a population of 165256. Males constitute 63% of the population and females 37%. Islam is the predominant religion with 95% of the total population , Sikhs , Christians and small community of hindus makes the rest .Uri has an average literacy rate of 85%, higher than the national average of 60%: male literacy is 90%, and female literacy is 76%. In Uri, 40% of the population is under 6 years of age. The population is mostly Pahari with Gujjars living mostly in the mountains surrounding the town. Culturally Uri is linked with other side of kashmir mainly azad kashmir in POK and less with the valley of kashmir.

Uri the ancient town has many famous schools and temples .There are twenty higher secondary schools and a govt college besides many private institutions famous among them are Army Goodwill School, New Light Infantry English Medium School Uri and M.M.Gujral Education Institution.A private School of high reputation named "K.A.D" is also rendering its service to the people of Uri and Boniyar from last 20 years.The College building is completed .There are nearly 100 Govt Schools in The Education Zone Uri. The Earthquake of 2005 destroyed many schools and half of them are yet to be completed besides a time period of 4 years. The Degree College in uri is likely to be handed over in December,2013 with a sprawling campus located near bamlok colony. Army run school is also imparting education to a number of students of the area and is mainly responsible for increase in literacy rate in Uri

- The NHPC managed Uri II is located near salamabad uri. The cross LOC trade point is also stationed at this place where selected items are transported to from Pok to Iok. No exchange of money it is a barter trade.
