Usa (宇佐市 Usa-shi) is a city located in Ōita Prefecture, Japan. Usa is famous for being the location of the Usa Shrine, built in 725, the head shrine of all of Hachiman shrines in Japan. Nearby is the Ōita Prefectural Museum of History.
Usa is made up of three areas.
- Usa, the area surrounding the Usa Shrine
- Yokkaichi, the area surrounding the Hongan-ji temple, and an administrative town from the Edo Period
- Nagasu, a port area
On March 31, 2005 the towns of Ajimu and Innai, both from Usa District, were merged into Usa.
As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 49,021 and the density of 274.94 persons per km². The total area is 178.30 km².
The town was promoted to a city on April 1, 1967.

[edit] Product labeling
There have been claims that products made in this town and exported to the US in the 1960s carried the label "MADE IN USA, JAPAN", for it to have an appearance that the product is "Made in USA". It is, however a myth that Japan renamed the town "Usa" following World War II so that goods exported from Japan could be labeled as such.[1] The town had this name long before the war, at least from 8th century, and is not where the majority of Japanese industry is located.
