Lego Sexxx, also known as Lego Sex, is a new age Ska band, founded in Bloomington, Illinois. Lego Sexxx is one of the leading bands in the underground Ska movement, known as the Fourth Wave of Ska. The band has gained its fan recognition from its ability to perform covers of well known Ska songs with a new age sound. The band members are Neil Pickering on the guitar and vocals, Sean Comerford on second guitar, John Lawrence on bass, Adam Nichols on drums, Jack Healy and Jeff Lawson on trumpet, and Alex Coffman on trombone.[1]

[edit] Origin
The group originally started playing as a group called Smart Remark[2], which John Lawrence and Neil Pickering both played in. Best known for their songs The L Word and Lets Move to San Francisco, the band stayed together for a while to play some shows. Although they had a cult following in Miami, Ohio, Smart Remark eventually disbanded. During the next couple of years, Pickering and Lawrence started talking about putting together another band. This time, however, they wanted to include brass in order to create a more reggae/ska sound. In order to do this, they drafted Healy and Coffman to play trumpet and trombone. As the group started to take form, John and Neil started to brainstorm names. They decided on Lego Sexxx one day while talking about how they used to make Lego versions of their friends have sex with one another.
The name just seemed to fit. We all thought it was funny and the fans liked it, so it seemed to stick with us pretty well. The name is what gives us that final Ska touch.
-John Lawrence, Bass
According to Lawrence, the name seemed vulgar, crude, and out there, which is precisely why it was a hit with the local fans. The group then recruited Adam Nichols to play drums and Heather Talbert to play trumpet.
The first show Lego Sexxx played was a local benefit show for pregnant teens. While they did not have instant success at this show, the band continued to play together and finally performed at the Children's Discovery Museum in uptown Normal, Illinois. The band covered such songs as the Underdog by Spoon, Wasted and Ready[3] by Ben Kweller, and California by Phantom Planet. The show, which was free admission, was a hit with the fans and was a great debut for the band. The show was covered on the front page of the Aegis newspaper[4]. Lego Sexxx was also mentioned in the April 2006 issue of NME Magazine[5] for their performance. Lego Sexxx is now one of the leading bands in the 4th wave of Ska, playing and performing a new age Ska type sound.
On August 26, 2008, Heather Talbert was let go from the band. The band complained she had no real place in the world of Ska. After her release, Trumpet player Jeff Lawson, who was a friend of many of the band members, was recruited to take her place.
[edit] The 4th Wave
The style of music known as Ska has been around since the late 1950's. A combination of Jazz, reggae, and punk rock, Ska creates a sound unlike any heard on the music scene in many years. Music historians typically divide the history of ska into three periods: the original Jamaican ska scene of the 1960s, the 2 Tone ska revival that started in England in the late 1970s, and the Third Wave Ska movement, which started in the 1980s. Lego Sexxx, a rapidly growing Ska band, is currently in the oncoming Fourth wave of Ska[6]. While much of the 90's Ska music died out in the 2000s, the next generation of Ska is taking form and will likely be on the scene by 2015[7]
[edit] Future
As for the future, Lego Sexxx plans on recording many covers of songs and playing many more shows. Their album, Collars up Panties down, is said to debut in 2009. Others plans for the group include going on a tour to raise awareness of rabies later this year. Lego Sexxx is one of the few remaining Ska bands around, and is currently leading the 4th wave of Ska, after the third wave of Ska died out in the 90's. They are hoping to reinvent the once popular form of music by bring a new age sound to traditional Ska and reggae music.
