Sarah Burton (born, 1975) is a British fashion designer and the creative director for the brand Alexander McQueen.

Personal Life and Career

Sarah Burton was born in Manchester south of Cheshire county in the north-west of England. She is one of five children of an accountant father and a music teacher mother. She enrolled in the legendary London fashion school Central Saint Martins[1], where she specialized in print design and interned under[2] Lee Alexander McQueen. While studying print design, Burton joined McQueen’s team in 1996. McQueen hired Burton straight out of school in 1997, with her design responsibilities extending to men's wear, accessories, footwear and other categories. When McQueen sold a majority stake to the Gucci Group[3], part of France’s PPR SA in 2000, Burton became head design director of women's wear. She has spent fourteen years employed under McQueen. When McQueen committed suicide in February 2010, she resisted succeeding him. In May 2010, the Gucci Group appointed Burton as the new creative director for Alexander McQueen.

She is married to fashion photographer, David Burton.

Career after McQueen’s Death

Since McQueen’s death, Burton revived the McQueen legacy .Her first men’s wear collection was showcased at Milan Fashion Week[4] in June 2010 in Milan, Italy for Spring-summer 2011.The theme for the runway show [5]Pomp and Circumstance hinted to “historicism of suppressed waists and high collars with a Regency flair, or in the cutaway jackets and morning suit striped pants.”The lightness and theatrical accents in the garments displayed Burton's interplay between aristo and working-class[6]. Shortly after, Burton débuted her first women’s wear collection on October 5, 2010 in Paris, France at Paris Fashion Week. Controversies

Since the death of McQueen speculation has caused concern for the brand image. Over the years since 2007, the label has lost a significant amount of profit under the parent company, Gucci group. Skepticism in Burton who has yet to prove she is a visionary designer still remains. Despite brand criticism, the Gucci group and CEO Jonathan Akeroyd of the Alexander McQueen label remain positive and confident about appointing Burton for the position.

Future for McQueen

Burton intends to keep the McQueen brand on the lighter side opposed to the dark. The McQueen essence and spirits will continue to enhance the brand. The softer side of the revised brand is a feminine attribute of Burton distinctly existing in the starting point for a McQueen collection which could be some beach mats, a matchstick figurine, a pile of shells or a study of his family tree. She believes in teamwork and that McQueen is a wearable brand. Distinctly her approach is to not to pretend to be McQueen.

Celebrity Designs

Burton has designed for Sarah Jessica Parker and Lady Gaga[10] .
