If two male characters absolutely despise each other, then there will always be hordes of fangirls writing fanfics and drawing fanart in which the two male characters (who DESPISE each other, remember) are gay with each other, even if that would require taking them completely out of character.
For evidence of this phenomenon, I cite the fandoms of Fullmetal Alchemist (Ed+Roy, Ed+Envy) and Harry Potter (Harry+Draco).
