Figure 1. A. view of an idealized action potential shows its various phases as the action potential passes a point on a cell membrane. B. Recordings of action potentials are often distorted compared to the schematic view because of variations in electrophysiological techniques used to make the recording.

[edit] Basic science (psychology)

The story of basic science (psychology) runs like this. There was discussion of the psychology sidebar. I had gotten some consensus to change the term "research psychology" to "basic science (psychology)" because the term "research psychology" suggested that "applied psychology," the other overarching category in the sidebar, did not involve research. The basic-applied theme is a good overarching way to divide the subject matter.

Once there was consensus regarding the sidebar, I started a Wikipedia page for basic science (psychology). I don't remember, but it is possible that I replaced a page called research psychology. I was going to enter paragraph-length descriptions of each area. Another contributor entered links to articles on the divisions within basic science (psychology); I think the contributor objected to including paragraph-length descriptions of the divisions and preferred shortening the page by using internal links. I should have continued to add content in a manner similar to the content on the applied psychology page. I regret that now.

Like you, I don't like the look of the basic science (psychology) page. I am going to work on it, but I would like to run this by you. I think the simplest thing to do would be to insert the appropriate descriptions from the psychology page with some edits. I will work on it.Iss246 (talk) 15:22, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

I read your note on my user page. I appreciate your concerns about the division between basic and applied science. The division between basic and applied science is one of proportion. I/O psychologists may conduct basic research but the preponderance of the research they conduct is applied. Although personality psychologists may conduct applied research that bears on alleviating psychological distress, the preponderance of their research is basic, and without direct application. A similar situation exists in civil engineering and physics.Iss246 (talk) 04:43, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
