Tricky Dates

  • Before 57 BC: At the moment of the arrival of the Romans, there could have been either Celts or Germanics here, or perhaps some other folks. The Celts could have lived here for a few hundred years in the late 1st millenium BC. Befor that date there were proto-Celts. Roman, Germanics and (proto-)Celts are all Indo-Europeans. Indo-Europeans entered the area probably in 3000 BC, by assimilating people's who were already there. Before 3000 BC, the coastal area was a very tough place to live in, due to the rising sea level of the melting glaciers.
  • 57 BC-39 BC: Germanic immigrants settle in the Rhine Delta. Specific date unknown.
  • 39 BC-12 BC: A branch of the Chatti, the Caninefates, live in the area, and are not yet formally subdued by the Romans.
  • C. 240-C. 249: Roman fortresses in the Lower Rhine area destroyed. They were rebuilded during the reign of Decius 249-251.
  • 256-258: Roman fortresses in the Lower Rhine area are destroyed again by the Franks and rebuild during the reign of Gallienus.
  • 259-260: Another invasion of the Franks.
  • 274-628: Unknown who ruled in the Lower Rhine area. It could be the Franks on some occasions.
  • 628-650: Utrecht was Frankish, but it is unknown who ruled west of Utrecht.
  • 692-1572: The pope claimed being the first representative above the emperor.
  • 800-1648: The Holy Roman Emperor claimed to be the ruler of the earth above the pope.
  • The data about the Danish vikings is very contradictive. What we can be sure of is that Rorik in Friesland for decades and Godfried for a few years afterwards.
  • 840-850: Rhine delta was conquered by the Danish vikings in that decade, so the Danish rule started before 850.
  • 880-882: King Rorik died somewhere in this period and was not immediately followed by Godfried, King of the Sea.
  • 1577-1795: Sovereignty is not clear. Leiden belonged to the county of Holland and the Republic of the United Netherlands.
  • 1795-1810: The Netherlands were independent in theory, but actually French.
  • 1919-1940: The Netherlands were part of the League of Nations.
  • 1945-present: The Netherlands are part of the United Nations.
  • 1945-present: The Netherlands are part of the Benelux.
  • 1956-present: The Netherlands are part of the European integration, at presently represented by the European Union. The countries of the European Union were supposed to have a single foreign policy since 1992. The war on Iraq has proven that there is no unity.
