Caligula was emperor of the Roman Empire from 37 to 41. In 37, he gave Damascus to the Nabataean kingdom. In 38 he turned Commagene in a vassal kingdom again under Antiochus IV, including a part of Cilicia. Antiochus quickly fell out of grace and lost his kingdom to the Romans. And, Sophene was given in the same year to Cotys IX. In 40 he ordered the assassination of king Ptolemy of Mauretania, after which he intended to turn Mauretania into two Roman provinces. The Berbers subsequently revolted against Roman domination. Caligula was killed in 41 by the Praetorian Guard.
