[edit] This Wikipedia user has had enough
I have retracted myself from Wikipedia.
I have contributed to Wikipedia since June 22nd, 2006 (on the Dutch Wikipedia since August 12th, 2006), but a bit over 5 years later I have finally had enough. After years of taking the crap of whiny editors and contributing without a word of praise, the final drop was the OTRS team systematically ignoring me and thwarting my every action when I tried obtaining OTRS approval for photos by other people (for which I had written permission!).
My philosophy on Wikipedia has always been that its power lies in the possibility for everyone to contribute individual knowledge and bundling it with others to create a great framework of human knowledge. Unfortunately, the subculture that has evolved among the die-hard Wikipedians can best be described as "autistic" (see note below) and it requires perseverance of anyone outside "Team Tunnel Vision" to not leave filled with a sense of resentment, disappointment, regret and agitation.
I encourage no one to do the same as I. Over the years I have seen many people giving up, and for good reason. But I myself felt for several more years that contributing was worth my while. If you are like that right now and you still have the energy to go on, great! I am happy you do, because I still stand behind the above philosophy I have on Wikipedia. But I also believe that the majority of occasional contributors will hang on until they've had enough of getting irritated, whether it be sooner or later. All I can say is, hang in there! You know when your time to go has come.
Note on my use of the word "autistic": I would never use this description in a disrespectful sense. For example, I know two people who were diagnosed with classic autism and one diagnosed with PDD-NOS very well and find them wonderful people in their own way. In addition, I have two friends who care for a group of adults with autism. The way autism affects the lives of people with this condition is no laughing matter, and I know the extent to which it controls the lives of those with autism, their families, and their professional caregivers. People with autism are able to learn social behavior by means of a script, allowing one to adjust to the world fairly well in interactions with other people. Because someone with autism tends to focus on a limited range of interests, Wikipedia may provide one with the opportunity be socially engaged within the scope of the script. I have frequently recognized such autistic behavioral patterns on Wikipedia. This is why I also named it as such. That said, let me emphasize once again: I do not mean any disrespect by using the term, nor do I think any less of anyone suffering from autism.
[edit] Still maintaining
The articles directly related to the musicians Tim Christensen and Owsley are the only exception to my decision to cease any and all activity contributing to Wikipedia. The rationale is that I am basically the sole contributor to these pages and I find my support for them outweighs me being fed up with the rotten world behind Wikipedia. I pretty much stick to myself editing these articles, and these articles alone.
