The International Centre for the Study of Planned Events (ICSPE) which is an approved and endorsed research centre within the School of Business, Enterprise and Management at Queen Margaret University Edinburgh, Scotland was founded in 2008 [1]. Professor Joe Goldblatt, an international leading figure in the field of event management and the author of the first textbook in the field, is tasked with directing the Centre [2]. The Centre which is located in Edinburgh, the unrivalled festival capital of Europe, is the world’s first International Centre for the Study of Planned Events through scientific research and is the first Global Centre for the development of Eventology [3] [4] The International Centre is the only institution of its kind in the world dedicated to providing government, event professionals and sponsors with scientific evidence of the linkages between planned events and education, health, wealth, environmental sustainability and social cohesion. The International Centre provides assessment and evaluation, research and development services for government officials and policy makers, event professionals in corporations, festivals, sports and corporate sponsors [5].

The Centre conducts research to advance the formation of government policy and promote industry sustainability in the field of Planned Events such as festivals, fairs, conferences and meetings. The Centre assists the festival and events industry to identify predictable, reliable and sustainable funding [6] [7] [8]. It also provides evidence of how Planned Events can promote social cohesion, improved educational and health outcomes, sustainable environmental advancement as well as bringing economic benefits to society [1].

The Centre was launched on 21st Aug, 2008 with a public lecture presented by Jean McFaddin, executive producer of the Macy*s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, known to be one of America’s biggest and best loved events [1].

Team Approach[edit]

Each project in the Centre is managed by a team of professional researchers selected from the most qualified academic and professional experts of the Queen Margaret University [6].

Located in the School of Business, Enterprise and Management (BEaM) at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, Scotland, the Centre has the knowledge and capability to look at the organisation’s internal and external resources and needs, and plan and launch the event. Its areas of expertise include every facet of successful event planning: procedures, risk management, marketing, implementation and assessment. BEaM also develops the project management capabilities to create an operational schedule and keep the event on track and on budget. The Centre has the expertise and tools to provide the coordination of the event through on-site event management that will help to run the project efficiently with a focus on quality. BEaM can also provide organisations with the evaluation tools to measure the event’s success [1].
