About me

Me in October 2007

I am a retired sailor currently living in Jacksonville, Florida. I was born in Chestnut Hill, PA, and I grew up in Coral Springs, FL. I have lived in Chula Vista, CA, San Diego, CA, Oak Harbor, WA, and Gainesville, FL.

During my time in the US Navy (1987-2007) I was stationed at the following locations:

I am currently a History major at the University of North Florida, with a minor in Political science.

My beliefs and biases

While I do try to avoid letting my personal biases affect my editing, I have opinions on many subjects, some of which are fairly strong. Accordingly, I have addressed some of my personal views which may unintentionally color my contributions.

I am more-or-less neolibertarian, in political terms. I support a vigorous and engaged foreign policy, and recognize that there are some issues in which the federal government should be involved. For the most part, however, I believe that government should not interfere in religion, commerce, industry, or personal relationships (or any combinations thereof).

I have little patience for people who perceive everything from a purely emotional point-of-view. I can be extremely abrupt and abrasive with such people, as I find it very hard to relate to them. I have emotions, but they don't control me.

I have religious views, but they are mine alone, and not open to discussion or change. I harbor a strong dislike for religious activists who attempt to exert control over people who do not share their beliefs through any method, but I am equally contemptuous of those who belittle the adherents of any religion. If you don't agree with the tenets of a religion, that is your choice. However, chastising others who do is obnoxious and boorish.

I prefer the use of male singular pronouns when others refer to me. I don't like plurals (there is only one of me), and I strongly object to any of the various "gender-neutral pronoun" neologisms. A quick review of my user page makes my sex clear; if you are going to discuss me, please use the appropriate pronouns.

My activities on Wikipedia

I am a member of WikiProject Florida, and a large portion of my editing is related to Florida-related topics. Occasionally, I have the urge to categorize the thousands of uncategorized articles that are under the aegis of the WikiProject, with an eye towards possibly removing some of the less-relevant articles, and targeting the higher-importance articles for Article Improvement Drive collaboration. When the urge strikes, you will see my edit count spike.

I am an infobox fanatic; I strongly believe that articles for which a standardized infobox template exists should include them from the very first edit. I'm not a fan of "customized" infobox templates that relate to only a handful of articles; I am referring to widely used templates such as the ones used for cities, radio stations, NRHP sites and the like, not an infobox for a single company linking all of its products together.

My Wikipedia philosophy is quite complex, and defies easy categorization. My ideal for a more perfect Wikipedia would be to create many wikis for pop culture topics and transwiki many of the related articles on Wikipedia to them. (Some of these already exist in a fairly substantial format, such as Memory Alpha and Wookiepedia). I see no reason why all 703 episodes of the live-action Star Trek (and 17 of the 22 animated episodes) should have articles on Wikipedia, when Memory Alpha exists. (Before you go hating on me for that, note that I own all 720 episodes on DVD, as well as all but three of the movies.) This does not make me a deletionist, however. I also believe in structurism, and a combination of two opposing philosophies mergism and seperatism; merging in small articles rather than deleting them and seperating large articles rather than deleting content. I also agree with the tenets of exclusionism, although that also leads back to transwikism again.

On 1 May 2008 I was confirmed as an Administrator, and received my mop.

I am User:Horologium on all WMF projects except for the German Wikipedia, where someone else has claimed that name and usurpation is not allowed. However, only on a handful of the other projects do I have more than 10 edits. (Spanish, French, Italian, Polish and Simple English Wikis, and commons and Wikiversity.)
