Born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1962 Jorg Breuning continues a multi generations tradition in cleverly landscaping and smart engineering. Over more than 30 years Jörg is known for his environmental passion, brilliant design and engineering solutions. As a passionate teacher, pioneer in in advanced Living Technology and Design he brought an array of patents on the way. Jörg Breuning has master pieced his practical skills in uncountable projects with live vegetation (including Green Roof Plants) and understands the synergistic power of living components. His profound knowledge of natural processes combined with his thirst for sustainable challenges made him a pioneer of modern green roof technology in Northern America. Beside modern Green Roof Technology he is also the only person in America with magnificent experience in rail road greening systems (Green Rails) and natural swimming pools with live plants. Jörg Breuning is frequently sought out for his expertise by key experts, key players and founding members of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. In 1999 - at the starting point of modern Green Roof Technology in Northern America - he was the teacher and supporter of the first successful green roof projects (City Hall of Chicago, Boston World Trade Center, Gimbles Building Pittsburgh, Evansville Library – all award winners). At the same time Jorg also educated todays industry experts like: David Beattie, Robert Berghage, Ed Snodgrass, Charlie Miller, Robert Hermann, Kurt Horvath, Michael J. Curry, ASTM and GRHC committee members. Jorg Breuning probably installed more extensive green roofs in Germany than there are currently (2009) in the entire United States of America. Jorg Breuning grew up and lived almost 45 years in the Kingdom of Baden-Württemberg with the capitol Stuttgart in Germany. This is the home of the world’s most important jewel in modern, sustainable and smart technologies. Stuttgart has approximately 200 inventions per 100,000 inhabitants every year. This is almost 20 times over the average in Europe (13 / 100,000) and 6 times over the USA average (30 / 100,000). To name a few inventions from Baden Württemberg from the last decades:

• Gottlieb Daimler (1886 first Automobile/ gasoline engine, first motorcycle and gasoline powered boat)

Jörg Breuning’s innovative horticultural and Green Roof carrier started in September 1980. As a young employee of Otto Arnold GmbH – one the first green roof installers in the world – he participated many green roof installation including the Allianz Insurance building in Stuttgart, Germany. This project incorporates different types of green roofs including large turf / lawn areas. Today after more than 30 years it is still in perfect working conditions – it is authentic German engineering combined with advanced construction skills. The green roof design also includes an automatic subsurface irrigation system (mechanical – not electric). The green roof technology was provided by optima and it was so successful that this system replaced many other systems like the first modular green roof system (or tray system from Bauder) that consistently failed. In the early 80’s Optima offered the first hybrid green roof system – a combination of extensive and intensive greening – that allowed highly flexible and efficient in-place or wall-to-wall greening on impervious areas like roofs.

1982, Jörg Breuning finished his 2 years landscaping apprenticeship or so called dual education system for professionals. The German apprenticeship education is a worldwide unique education system that allows students working in a company and at a profession orientated school at the same time. It is an advanced combination of theory, practice and getting a low salary. This smart education system has a long tradition in Germany, dates back 300-400 years and is seem as the foundation for engineering and innovation.

In 1983 Jorg Breuning announced an important step stone in his carrier: Among the first people in world he achieved his green roof professional accreditation and certified installer licenses provided by optima – at this time the world’s leading supplier , manufacturer and the "inventor" of modern green roof technology. The optima Dachbegrünungen professional education system with accreditation boosted the entire green roof industry and gave the landscaping industry an entire new profile. This education (GRP or OFM in German) is now essential part of the 2-3 years horticultural and landscaping apprenticeship system. Optima Dachbegrünungen (today Optigrün AG) continues to educated professional with the latest developments in modern green roof technology – so far Jorg joined at least 18 seminars in the last 20 years as an attendee and as a speaker/teacher.

From 1985 to 1987 Jorg Breuning joined one of the world’s oldest horticultural schools at the University of Hohenheim. The horticultural school and research facility dates back to King Wilhelm the First of Württemberg in the 18 century. During the following 4 semesters he was taught true green (sustainable) technology in horticulture and landscaping. He finished as a horticultural and landscape technician and with a national landscape and green roof instructor certification. Achieving this advanced technician degree in Germany requires a minimum 2 year apprenticeship plus a minimum of 3 years continues work in a certified landscape company – overall, students at this school are not accepted when less than 5 years of intensive practice in this profession.
While finishing his major education step Breuning started his own landscaping company with strong focus on Green Roof installations, nature pool/pond designs, green walls, greening rails roads and specialized hydro seeding for “hard to establish vegetation” areas. Often he was subcontracted to from various landscaping companies to develop or start their green roof divisions.

1988-2000. All these horticultural talents and brilliant innovation qualities helped Jorg Breuning to develop various patents for Optigreen but also for his own company Jörg Breuning GmbH. His unmatched skills were soon discovered as the main source for any beginning green roof project in North America and he was teaching, presenting and developing important aspects of modern green roof technology. Jorg’s out-of-the-box ideas helped to progress an entire industry and was also part of leading green roof research (e.g. stormwater retentions simulation systems in German and at Penn State University State College).

2001. United States started their first green roof research program at Penn State University in State College under Dr. David Beattie and consulted by Jörg Breuning . Jörg also introduced the German FLL guideline (Green Roof Guideline) to the US and systematically helped to make American’s aware of modern green roof technology since the beginning.

2002-today Jörg Breuning started Green Roof Service LLC as a division of his German company. Together with Peter M. Philippi – retired from Green Roof service LLC in 2010 – he started an entire green movement in the US and the awareness of usable space on the top of buildings. His missionary work for modern Green Roof Technology and sustainable Living Architecture and Design has already developed an entire new industry and an incredible demand for living technologies to offset man-made impact into the environment.

Jörg Breuning has a strong focus on modern green roof technology but his knowledge and expertise is also rooted in many other environmental technologies when related to live plants and organisms like: Green Walls, Green Rail Road Tracks, Nature Swimming Pools, advanced composting techniques, solar and wind combination on roofs, recycling opportunities and systems. Most of his German and European based techniques, systems and technologies are decades ahead of American “green” ideas.
