Welcome to my brand new ID. (Acquired 2004-06-11 ca. 16:30 UTC or 17:30 British Summer Time)

My name's Alex Wright and I'm a 24-year-old university student in Birmingham, Central England. I'm unashamedly supportative of a just settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, though cynical following Hamas' take-over of Gaza and Netanyahu's policies on settlements which risk burying the two state solution leaving only a one state solution. I'm amazed by the recent revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia, and support the Libyan rebels in their efforts to overthrow Gaddafi.

I completely condemn all attacks on civilians and other war crimes, and particularly despair of the massacres of thousands of civilians committed by Western democracies in their wars. (For example, in 1999 US President Clinton, British PM Blair and International Development Secretary Clare Short--who apparently condemned the war on Iraq--claimed a Belgrade TV station was a military target, and it was legal to murder 16 journalists just to keep it off the air for a few hours. I'm sure they wouldn't consider CNN, FoxNews and the BBC military targets).

I have also discovered a new-found anxiety of Russia's apparent renewal of expansionist polices in Eastern Europe following the war in Georgia, and find it interesting that many columnists opposed to US imperialism (e.g. in The Guardian) also try to blame NATO or the USA for the recent Russian invasion: which is the first non-Western, non-African invasion of another country since 1991 (unless I've forgotten any: if Israel is considered a Western country)--and the first attack on another country by the Russian Federation.

Russia is especially hypocrytical about if you consider Chechnya. And the West has problems getting on a moral high horse given Kosovo, and that since the end of the Cold War the US has invaded Grenada, Panama, Haiti, Iraq, Afghanistan and has bombed Sudan, Pakistan and Libya whilst Russia has invaded only Chechnya--internationally considered part of Russian territory, and now Georgia (although "peacekeepers" were deployed to South Ossetia and Abkhazi in early 1990s).

Despite my disagreements with what I consider aggressive wars or other questionable acts by "the West" or "us", I am very worried that all we can do to the Russians is complain loudly, and have changed my view of NATO--although worry that Article 5 on collective self-defence may have become meaningless. I think I was right to question the wisdom of leaving so few soldiers in Britain to defend Britain and/or our allies in Europe.

I speak quite a bit of German (I'm studying German for A-level) and I have also done GCSE (English secondary school leaving) exams in French and Spanish. I managed to memorise most of the Russian Cyrillic and Greek alphabets without that much effort, although I don't know many words. I keep meaning to learn some Esperanto but never get round to it.

I added the original "Critisism of Reagan" section (now split up into smaller bits) to the late Ronald Reagan's article, shortly after his death. Although after some spelling corrections it mysteriously disappeared until I put it back on 11 June 2004.

[edit] Diego Garcia

After watching a Pilger programme, I am also very angry about Harold Wilson's forcible deportation (or mass kidnap) of 1500 Chagos Islanders and the sale of Diego Garcia to the Americans for a £5 million discount on illegal weapons of mass destruction (Polaris nukes), who use it is a military base. I am very angry that the British criminal justice system continues to let surving conspirators, Lord Healey, get away with this crime against humanity.

[edit] In Memory of Yasser Arafat

I give my condolences to the Palestinian people and the Arafat family following the death on 11 November 2004 of Palestinian President (since 1996) and PLO chairman (since 1969) Yasser Arafat aka Abu Ammar. He was a guerrilla leader and a resistance fighter who never gave up fighting for a Palestinian state, and failed to surrender at Camp David in 1999 when Bill Clinton and Ehud Barak offered him a Bantustan solution ignoring the right to return of the millions of Palestinian refugees and the occupation of East Jerusalem.

Arafat was probably a war criminal, but then so arguably was Winston Churchill if the carpet bombing of Germany is taken into account--this has not stopped almost all Britons revering him as a hero (including myself) for saving our country. Many French guerrillas killed unarmed people in the Second World War and many might have car-bombed civilians in Germany if they had been able to. Palestinians presumably had similar feelings towards the PLO and other guerrilla groups despite their atrocities against civilians.

I hope the new PLO chairman Mahmoud Abbas aka Abu Mazen will continue the struggle through armed and non-violent resistance--and through negotiations if possible--to liberate Palestine from Israeli colonial occupation.

I despair of US President George W. Bush claiming he supports (as has every other US president) the establishment of an independent Palestinian state as he continues to send $12 million a day in financial and military aid to the aggressive colonial occupying power: propping up their economy since tourism dried up; and subsisidising their brutal, murderous, torturing military and security forces, their illegal occupation, demolition of Palestinian houses and building of illegal Jewish colonial settlements.

Not to mention Bush's endorsement of the Butcher of Sabra and Chatila, Ariel Sharon's plan to annex colonies on the West Bank with the help of the apartheid wall after turning Gaza into a massive open air prison, by withdrawing soldiers and colonists but apparently maintaining control of the airspace, ports, and the border with Egytian Sinai.

[edit] Your question about Lebanese terrorists

I don't know what pro-Israeli Wikipedians would revert. You might ask one. Incidentally, this debate belongs here. Quadell (talk) (help)[[]] 21:06, Nov 16, 2004 (UTC)
