A Death Eater meeting takes place at the home of Lucius Malfoy where Lord Voldemort learns from Severus Snape and a Ministry official the date Harry Potter will permanently leave the Dursleys' house, at age 17.

The Order of the Phoenix arrive to escort Harry from the Dursley's and despite a decoy, the real Harry is identified and attacked by Voldemort and Death Eaters. Harry and his companions escape (though Hedwig is killed) and arrive at The Burrow, where they learn George Weasley lost an ear to Snape, and Mad-Eye Moody was killed by Voldemort.

Later, the Minister for Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, arrives at The Burrow to distribute bequests from Albus Dumbledore's will: Ron is given Dumbledore's Deluminator; Hermione receives a book of children's stories written in part with Ancient Runes; and Harry inherits Godric Gryffindor's sword and the Snitch that he caught during his first Quidditch match. The Ministry claims that the sword was not Dumbledore's to bequest and withholds it. Harry finds a magical inscription on the Snitch: "I open at the close."
