My background

The coat of arms of County Londonderry.

Hi! Fair fa' ye! Céad míle fáilte! Welcome to my user page!

I'm a long time Wikipedian having made my first edit back since 21st May, 2006. I hail from County Londonderry in what is to me the most beautiful part of the United Kingdom, the province of Northern Ireland, situated on the wind and rain swept island of Ireland. Whilst I personally experienced little of The Troubles despite growing up throughout some of the worst of it, I know people who have lost loved ones thanks to pointless terrorism. I have suffered sectarianism however, yet have never let it get in the road of making friends from both sides of the community.

My main interests are music and British and Irish history, though most of my contributions are in regards to Irish history as quite a lot of stuff is lost to people and there is little gathered documentation on some things for people to find on the Internet. One example is the ancient Irish district of Glenconkeyne and the former barony of Loughinsholin, both of which I created. Unlike most people on this island, I can treat Irish history with a balance most Irish historians fail too and can understand both sides in the vast majority of things.

As with many other editors I came here looking for something and decided to make an edit, and as you start to explore you feel the need to make other edits and well since 2007 I've ended up making over 18,000 edits and almost 130 articles. Almost half of my contributions are article content related, with a third on article and user talk pages.

I am a very laid back, easy going person who likes to drink, and my comments if they come across as crude or blunt or charged should not be interpreted as such. I simply don't see the need to pansy about with terminology and wording and my comments reflect that, but I rarely post a comment in anger or rage or meaning to cause offense to anybody.

For keeping a cool head and staying focused during heated discussions AgadaUrbanit (talk) 16:08, 4 December 2011 (UTC) For thoroughly sorting out both volunteers articles and keeping a cool head throughout, even when confronted with apathy, pig-headedness and an unhealthy dose of just don't like it-ism. A great job, and one that more than warrants this. JonCTalk 10:31, 11 October 2011 (UTC)The E=MC² Barnstar. To BullRangifer, for being a scientist in the very best meaning of the word; been proud to work with you. - Gleng 16:28, 28 September 2006 (UTC) Because if you want something, you gotta ask ... and for your patience, willingness and openness at co-operating on difficult things to do with "these islands", the "six counties", "countries, provinces, regions", and a whole lot more despite (or because of?) your own perspective. noob involved been around veteran seen it all older than the Cabal itself

Just to say thank you for all the efforts you have put into the Wikipedia articles on the Tobermore district and Northern Ireland and Ireland more generally. In tracing my family's rather chequered history I have found them in Drumballyhagan. It was good to see the area so comprehensively described.

Mabuska you do yourself a disservice by comparing yourself to anything the these socks stand for. You, as I know are worth more to this project than 1000 of these socks. I look forward to your intelligent input in the future. Bjmullan (talk) 00:30, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

Cquote1.png The idea of exclusive national homelands is a modern fantasy... Yet once they were settled, all the peoples were keen to invent a unique pedigree for themselves. All have suffered too, from the attentions of nationalist historians in our own day, who think nothing of projecting modern identities backwards into prehistory. Cquote2.png

Most of my personal heroes are musicians, though I do have a couple of Irish political ones as well. Sadly only one of them is living.

Did you know?
  • The Irish Free State and later Republic of Ireland introduced Internment before the British did in Northern Ireland?
  • That the Irish Free State executed more republicans in the Irish Civil War than the British did after the 1916 uprising?
  • That Eamon de Velera and his government said that they would let republican hunger strikers die rather than acquiescence to their demands? Makes Margaret Thatcher's look a saint, seeing as she offered the 1981 ones all of their demands except for one from the onset.
  • That Eamon de Velera, the man who caused the Irish Civil War as he couldn't accept Partition would go on and turn down Winston Churchill's offer in World War II to enter the war in return for an United Ireland?
  • That the neutrality of the Irish Free State during World War II is more a myth than reality as they actually aided the Allies with various covert things
  • That people have lived in Ireland long before the emergence of the Gael? They emerged c100-200 BC whereas neolithic people have inhabited Ireland since at least 8'000 BC!
  • That the Plantation of Ulster was a failure and that it was largely destroyed in 1641, meaning that most of todays Ulster Protestants do not actually hail from it as some claim? In fact many Ulster Protestants are of Irish descent as well as settlers from other plantations or migrations to Ulster dating from the 1500's to 1800's.
  • The 'Gaelic' Ulster flag is actually the flag of the Hiberno-Norman Earldom of Ulster, ruled by the de Burgh family? The flag is based on their family crest with the addition of the Red Hand of Ulster. Due to the de Burgh families continual leaning towards (and in the case of Richard Óg de Burgh - actual close friendship with) the English king - its funny how Irish Republicans have adopted the flag.
  • The Duke of Wellington, Sir Arthur Weselley, the guy who beat Napoleon at Waterloo was an Anglo-Irish aristocrat?
  • The Battle of the Boyne wasn't a sectarian battle, with the Pope even giving his support to King William 3rd?
  • That the Battle of the Boyne wasn't very important in the whole scheme of the Williamite War in Ireland, with the Battle of Aughrim being more decisive?
  • That Belfast Protestants and Catholics joined forces in James Larkins 1907 Dock Strike, which if successful would have preceded the Russian Revolution in being the first socialist revolution in 20th century Europe?
