Bricker Amendment

The Hurricane Herald

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. Storm of the month

Tropical Storm Alberto near peak intensity

Tropical Storm Alberto was the first tropical storm of the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season. Forming on June 10 over the western Caribbean Sea, the system moved northwestward as a disorganized tropical depression due to dry air and wind shear. It passed to the west of Cuba, bringing heavy rainfall to Cuba and Grand Cayman. The rainfall damaged 37 homes and destroyed 3 in Havana. It strengthened over the Gulf of Mexico and became a tropical storm on June 11. The center reformed to the northeast near its deep convection, and Alberto reached a peak intensity of 70 mph (110 km/h) before weakening and hitting the Florida Panhandle on June 13. Alberto brought heavy rainfall to the southeastern United States, peaking at 7.16 inches in Raleigh, North Carolina. The rainfall in Florida was beneficial in places as it alleviated drought conditions. The storm indirectly caused two deaths: A pilot who crashed near Tampa due to poor conditions and a boy who drowned in the flooding in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Other tropical cyclone activity

• Tropical Depression Two-E briefly existed near the Mexican coast on June 3 to June 4 and brought heavy rainfall to Acapulco.
• Tropical Storm Jelawat lasted from June 26 to June 29 in the South China Sea and made landfall on China. The storm caused flooding which killed at least seven people.
• Tropical Storm Ewiniar formed on June 30 east of Palau. It is forecast to reach typhoon strength.

New and improved articles

• New storm articles include: Tropical Storm Alberto (2006), Typhoon Patsy (1970), Tropical Storm Larry (2003), Cyclone Steve and Hurricane Danielle (1998).
• New non-storm articles include: Subtropical ridge and List of named tropical cyclones.
• New Featured articles: Hurricane Nora (1997), List of New Jersey hurricanes, Hurricane John (1994) and Hurricane Katrina.
• Articles which became A/GA class include: Tropical Storm Allison (A), Eye (cyclone) (GA), Tropical Cyclone (GA), Project Stormfury (GA), Hurricane Lenny (GA), Hurricane Epsilon (2005) (GA), Hurricane Esther (1961) (GA), Tropical Storm Henri (2003) (GA) and Hurricane Camille (GA).

New articles and improvements wanted

• New article: List of California tropical storms and List of New Jersey hurricanes are both featured lists, so why is there no List of Louisiana hurricanes or List of Cuban hurricanes?
• The current collaboration of the fortnight is Hurricane Fifi, please help improve this article.
• Please help to expand and improve the coverage of Tropical cyclones on Wikinews.
• Improvements are requested to Hurricane Janet, Hurricane Erin (1995) and Pacific hurricane season articles.

Member of the month

Cyclone barnstar

The June member of the month is Jdorje. The WikiProject awards this to him for his many contributions to the coverage of tropical cyclones on Wikipedia. Jdorje founded the WikiProject in October 2005 and established much of the categorizations the project depends on. His most significant contributions include the Featured article 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane and his track map generator with which he has created hundreds of track maps.

Here's some pointers to making a good tropical cyclone article. Dear Tropical cyclone editor,

As a member of the Tropical Cyclone Wikiproject, you are receiving this message to describe how you can better tropical cyclone articles. There are hundreds of tropical cyclone articles, though many of them are poorly organized and lacking in information. Using the existing featured articles as a guide line, here is the basic format for the ideal tropical cyclone article.

1. Infobox- Whenever possible, the infobox should have a picture for the tropical cyclone. The picture can be any uploaded picture about the storm, though ideally it should be a satellite shot of the system. If that is not available, damage pictures, either during the storm or after the storm, are suitable. In the area that says Formed, indicate the date on which the storm first developed into a tropical depression. In the area that says Dissipated, indicate the date on which the storm lost its tropical characteristics. This includes when the storm became extratropical, or if it dissipated. If the storm dissipated and reformed, include the original start date and the final end date. Highest winds should be the local unit of measurement for speed (mph in non-metric countries, km/h in metric countries), with the other unit in parenthesis. The lowest pressure should be in mbars. Damages should, when available, be in the year of impact, then the present year. The unit of currency can be at your discretion, though typically it should be in USD. Fatalities indicate direct deaths first, then indirect deaths. Areas affected should only be major areas of impact. Specific islands or cities should only be mentioned if majority of the cyclone's effects occurred there.
2. Intro- The intro for every article should be, at a minimum, 2 paragraphs. For more impacting hurricanes, it should be 3. The first should describe the storm in general, including a link to the seasonal article, its number in the season, and other statistics. The second should include a brief storm history, while the third should be impact.
3. Storm history- The storm history should be a decent length, relatively proportional to the longevity of the storm. Generally speaking, the first paragraph should be the origins of the storm, leading to the system reaching tropical storm status. The second should be the storm reaching its peak. The third should be post-peak until landfall and dissipation. This section is very flexible, depending on meteorological conditions, but it should generally be around 3. Storm histories can be longer than three paragraphs, though they should be less than five. Anything more becomes excessive. Remember, all storm impacts, preparations, and records can go elsewhere. Additional pictures are useful here. If the picture in the infobox is of the storm at its peak, use a landfall picture in the storm history. If the picture in the infobox is of the storm at its landfall, use the peak. If the landfall is its peak, use a secondary peak, or even a random point in the storm's history.
4. Preparations- The preparations section can be any length, depending on the amount of preparations taken by people for the storm. Hurricane watches and warnings need to be mentioned here, as well as the number of people evacuated from the coast. Include numbers of shelters, and other info you can find on how people prepared for the storm.
5. Impact- For landfalling storms, the impact section should be the majority of the article. First, if the storm caused deaths in multiple areas, a death table would work well in the top level impact section. A paragraph of the general effects of the storm is also needed. After the intro paragraph, impact should be broken up by each major area. It depends on the information, but sections should be at least one paragraph, if not more. In the major impact areas, the first paragraph should be devoted to meteorological statistics, including rainfall totals, peak wind gusts on land, storm surge, wave heights, beach erosion, and tornadoes. The second should be actual damage. Possible additional paragraphs could be detailed information on crop damage or specifics. Death and damage tolls should be at the end. Pictures are needed, as well. Ideally, there would be at least one picture for each sub-section in the impact, though this sometimes can't happen. For storms that impact the United States or United States territories, this site can be used for rainfall data, including an image of rainfall totals.
6. Aftermath- The aftermath section should describe foreign aid, national aid, reconstruction, short-term and long-term environmental effects, and disease. Also, the storm's retirement information, whether it happened or not, should be mentioned here.
7. Records- This is optional, but can't hurt to be included.
8. Other- The ideal article should have inline sourcing, with the {{cite web}} formatting being preferable. Always double check your writing and make sure it makes sense.

May I ask you to unprotect those pages too: mg:Wikipedia:Mpandrindra and mg:Category:Mpandrindra? They are the local admin pages and nobody can ask for sysop rights nor vote... (you may also want to have a look at mg:Special:Log&type=protect).

I'm planning to request sysop status on mg: so that I won't disturb you any more after that :)

extremely heated RfC, possible personal attacks by subject

Would you mind taking a look at this RfC? The talk page is getting absurdly heated, with the subject of the RfC and an admin apparently trying to discredit what appears to be a valid Outside View by painting the poster--in the words of the subject of the RfC--as "gutter trash". The RFC subject is also throwing wild accusations of sockpuppetry at everyone in support of the RfC to discredit them, I suppose. rootology (T) 20:37, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

thanks for your message - yes, I was planning on working on it further. What happened was I was putting a list of Ancient Woodlands in the ancient woodland article, and I added Hatfield as I know it is an ancient woodland, then noticed (to my amazement, seeing as it's a pretty important historical and ecological site in the UK) that there's no article about it at all. I just wanted to put something as a stub for now, and I'll come back and augment it - add photos and more text as I did with Highgate Wood and Queen's Wood. ElectricRay 09:46, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Merovingian, the same editor has taken his battle to the CofCC page, where he has been reverting everyone's edits back to the same non-nuetral text he has been trying to insert on the Barbour page, along with issuing some nasty personal remarks there as well. August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential! What's New? In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs. To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Islamic Wikiproject Award

Would you be so kind as to go to the discussion about the Islamic Wikiproject Award? This has been a proposal that has lingered for donkey's yonks. I think the image is acceptable as a WP:PUA, but don't think the image is in line with most of the images at Wikipedia:Wikiproject awards. The design is not well supported, and right before I was going to archive the debate for lack of support, someone else moved it to the Wikiproject awards page.

Pat Kingsley

My point with Pat Kingsley isn't that firing her made Tom Cruise go insane, but that she was able to coach him and keep these kinds of things from coming out to damage his career. As soon as he got away from her advising him, he started acting in a way that was not beneficial to his public image, something that was probably the real him, but not something she would have otherwise let him do. -Insomniac By Choice

In recent months he has revealed more of himself than ever before. For nearly two decades he was represented by Pat Kingsley, the bulldog of the trade, who prevented access to journalists except under strict conditions and, presumably, advised Cruise on what he should or should not say to the press. Under Kingsley's careful control, Cruise said very little.

But earlier this year, Cruise dumped Kingsley in favour of his sister, Lee Anne DeVette (a fellow Scientologist) and she is now handling his public affairs. Many now blame DeVette for failing to stop Cruise from going on his romance/Scientology fling. It was DeVette who orchestrated a press-call for Cruise and Holmes in Rome. And it was DeVette who ruled journalists and studio executives must take a four-hour tour of the Scientology Centre in LA before meeting with the actor.

Anyway, I do think there's more than enough to warrant mention that once he got out of her tightly controlled public image, he started talking about Scientology a lot more (since his all-Scientology family began representing him) and has pretty much destroyed the All-American image he had all of those years under Kingsley. -Insomniac By Choice
