My name is Dan. I am a graduate student at the University of Texas at Austin, where I am working on a PhD in musicology. I earned a BMus from Vanderbilt University in 1999 and an MM from Texas in 2003. I grew up in Northern Virginia, but most of my family hails from Central Texas. I am a third-generation Longhorn.
Obviously, music is my primary interest. I specialize primarily in European music in the Twentieth century, but I have recently developed strong interests in Renaissance music, American classical music, and the early history of blues and rock and roll. I wrote my master's report on the sets of twenty-four preludes and fugues through all the major and minor keys by Johann Sebastian Bach (the Well-Tempered Clavier), Dmitri Shostakovich (the op. 87 set) and Anthony Burgess (the Bad-Tempered Electronic Keyboard). My doctoral dissertation will also include a chapter (at least) on Burgess, as well as some work on Paul Bowles and Charlie Chaplain.
I am shamelessly obsessed with college sports, especially basketball. I run a website featuring my own attempt at a computer ranking algorithm, which may or may not be a stupid waste of time, and I am the founder of the College Basketball Wiki. I also like candy, video games, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. My more serious non-musical interests include linguistics, astronomy, art history, poetry, and judaica.
I started editing on 31 March 2005. I am an inclusionist, and I believe that no matter what it is, someone somewhere is interested enough in it for it to have a Wikipedia article. I think that edit wars are stupid and childish. I try to avoid controversial articles and heavily edited articles, not because I'm afraid of getting my hands dirty, but because I don't usually care.
