I originally started this as a class project during the '09-'10 academic year with my History of Chicago class at Robert Lindblom Math & Science Academy. One of my objectives is to teach my students how Wikipedia can be used as a quality source once they understand what makes a quality article on the site. As part of this, they will take ownership of one or more articles and bring them up to higher standards, hopefully Good Article standing. I also hope to show them the value of peer review and editing in their writing. I am continuing this project during the '11-'12 academic year with my History of Chicago Colloquium. This is a non-credit class that meets every Wednesday. If you run across one of my students' articles, please be kind and constructive in your feedback and edits and understand that they are in the process of learning Wikipedia and becoming productive, effective Wikipedians.
Scope of Project
The project has been modified. The student will be exploring topics in the WikiProject and will begin researching. This is a year-long project. One objective is that students must materially contribute to the article they have chosen on a regular basis until the article has been improved sufficiently.
- Adding a paragraph or more of detailed information to an article with proper sources.
- Adding sources and references to an article that has none.
- Re-wording an article to meet Wikipedia's guidelines.
- Categories about Chicago
This project begins in early August and continues through June, 2012.
For this project, I have created a Class Sandbox. Students may use this area to experiement with Wikipedia's editing tools as much as they want. This is the place to learn how Wikipedia works. omg
These students are involved in with the WikiProject.
I am currently a history teacher at Robert Lindblom Math & Science Academy, part of Chicago Public Schools. I have been teaching since 2004 after earning my Bachelor's in the Teaching of History at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2009 I earned my M.Ed in e-learning from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign through the University of Illinois Global Campus. I believe technology is an essential component of modern education. One of my goals is to ensure my students have the necessary technology skills they will need in college and beyond. Part of that includes teaching them the important of collaboration.
