History
At The Greatest Moments event fundraiser the Pepperdine Men’s Volleyball team was recognized for their achievements in 2005. Under the category of Other Division 1 Schools, Pepperdine’s 25-2 season and 5th national championship was voted best moment of the year.
NCAA Championship
Men's Volleyball (1978, 1985, 1986, 1992, 2005) In 2005, Sean Rooney led the waves (25-2) to their first national championship since 1992. Pepperdine beat UCLA in the best of 5 games at the Pauley Pavilion. UCLA has won 19 championships, and this was the first time they ever lost a championship game on their home court.
Coaches
Head Coach – Marv Dunphy Dr. Marv Dunphy is recognized as one of the game’s premier coaches. As Pepperdines coach for 22 seasons, he has guided the Waves to four NCAA men’s volleyball titles. In 2004, Dunphy served as a Team Consultant for the USA Men’s team. At the summer games in Athens, Greece, the USA team was victorious until they reached the Bronze Medal match against the Russian National Team.

John Mayer began his volleyball career at Pepperdine for his junior year.
John Mayer was part of Pepperdine's 2005 National Championship team. Many Pepperdine players have great success after college. This was the case for John Mayer on June 19, 2006. John plays for USA’s No. 1 beach team with his partner Matt Prosser. Together they participated in the Beach Volleyball World University Championships at Cyprus. The US team finished third place by defeating the tough German team. The No. 2 German team consisted of Raimund Wenning and Stefan Schmeckenbecher.
The Next Beach Volleyball World Championships will be held in Germany.
Sean Rooney

High School Throughout Sean’s senior year of high school, he was regarded as one of the nation’s top prep players. Sean Rooney was select to Volleyball Magazine’s list of “Fabulous 50” recruits. The Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune named Rooney the 2001 Illinois state “Player of the Year.” The Wheaton Sun gave Rooney the title of “Male Athlete of the Year.” These awards were backed up by Wheaton Warrenville South’s Illinois stat title and a 38-0 record. Rooney holds career records for kills and service aces with 1,313 and 174 respectively. With many college options, Rooney considered Long Beach State, Ohio State, Penn State and USC.
Freshman Year of College
With no surprise, Rooney was selected as the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) “Freshman of the Year.” This award was received for helping Pepperdine reach a 29-5 record while advancing to the NCAA championship game. The eventually lost a four-game match to Hawaii. Rooney put up impressive numbers as he led the Waves to a regular season MPSF title and a post-season tournament championship. Rooney recorded 510 kills with a .378 attacking percentage, 26 service aces, 171 digs and 72 blocks.
Sophomore Year of College This year Sean Rooney improved from Second Team to First Team All-American by the AVCA and by Volleyball Magazine. Rooney posted 480 kills with a .354 hitting percentage as the Waves went 24-6. The Waves were successful due to Rooney’s 25 service aces and 83 blocks which was his one improvement from the year before.
Junior Year of College Rooney ignited his junior year and posted 461 kills with an impressive .406 hitting percentage. He ended the season with personal bests of 29 service aces and 88 blocks. These statistics met the requirements for Rooney to be named Volleyball Magazine’s Player of the Year. Rooney repeated honors for First Team All-American by AVCA and by Volleyball Magazine.
Recruiting Pepperdine ranked 7th in Volleyball Magazine’s top 10 recruiting classes.
Arena
Firestone Fieldhouse:
Firestone Fieldhouse is the University’s multi-purpse athletic facitly, where the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball games are played. The capacity is listed at 3,104. Other events at the field house include concerts, graduation ceremonies and lectures. During these events, attendance can reach about 5,000 people.
The Pepperdine Men’s Basketball team has played at Firestone Fieldhouse for 30 seasons. During this time the team has posted an excellent record of 298-104 (.741). The Women’s team has done just as well in 26 seasons with a record of 242-131 (.649). The Men’s Volleyball team has been remarkable with their 267-81 (.767) record in 30 seasons. The Woman’s team is not far behind in 28 seasons with a record of 238-85 (.737) at the Firestone Fieldhouse. The attendance record at Firestone Fieldhouse was set on February 6, 1976. On this day the Pepperdine Men’s Basketball team upset No.3 reanked UNLV 93-91. The Fieldhouse was packed with 4,500 screaming fans to celebrate the win. Firestone Fieldhouse hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA Championships for women's volleyball in 1999, 2000 and 2002. The FieldHouse went under renovation during 1992 and 2003. In 1992 the original rubber surface was replaced. Then in 2003 a new wood floor surface was installed.
