In Wikipedia, the HTML code "nowiki" can be used to stop the HTML code from having its normal effect. This is useful in Wikipedia Help pages or Talk pages when you wish to explain how HTML code works. For example, if you want to explain to another user on a Talk page how to sign your name with four tilde symbols, you cannot just type four tildes, because this will simply cause your signature to appear. To demonstrate what four tildes looks like, you need to temporarily "turn off" the HTML. To do this, you type <nowiki> </nowiki>, and then type the HTML code in between the two symbols. The HTML code will appear as text and it will not have its normal function. In this sentence, the use of the nowiki command is demonstrated in order to show what four tildes look like: ~~~~. The four tildes do not cause the signature to be signed because the nowiki command has been used to bracket this symbol.
