Patrick McMullan has been a New York City nightlife and society event photographer since the late 1970's. He was born in New York and raised in Huntington, Long Island, and educated at New York University where he majored in business. During his schooling, he attended Studio 54 & the Mud Club in downtown New York where he would encounter nightlife figures. Around 1978 Patrick McMullan worked for photographer Terry Stephenson, who took pictures of figures such as Edie Sedgwick, and also photographed still life images. Stephenson taught McMullan most darkroom work.

McMullan started his own photography business by taking jobs no one else was interested in, such as shooting ceiling leaks and basement floods. His first published photographs were theatrical photography for the Rediculous Theater Company.

Not feeling well in 1981, McMullan found himself with Embryonal Cell Carcinoma in advanced stage, a highly malignant form of Testicular Cancer.
