Thanks again for checking out my articles on a few baseball players that I felt deserved articles. User:Smithy john[edit]

Hello.

I saw that you blocked this user indefinately as a "vandal-only account." However, I am somewhat confused as to why you feel that this person is beyond reform even at his/her first block. I would appreciate it if you could explain this to me. Thanks! -- Where 19:07, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your quick reply :). However, I disagree with you on three counts. First of all, I still think there is a substantial chance that s/he could become a good-faith editor; look at benon. Second of all, the user does not know about the unblock template. Finally, I do not think an indefinate block for first-time vandals is consistant with the blocking policy. Please let me know what you think, and, as always, happy editing! -- Where 19:23, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

I just a left a message as well: let me know if you want me to do them, but I do them manually -- I really dislike citeweb. Sandy 23:15, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

OK, I need a few minutes to finish up a few other things, and then I'll do them. Sandy 23:31, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
I did 1, 3, 5 and 6. If you like this format, I can continue. I didn't do 2 and 4 yet, becasue I've been looking for that information from a verifiable source -- those are from a personal website, and I haven't been able to locate the content online elsewhere. Any ideas ? Let me know if I should continue, or if you prefer the old format (if so, we can revert). Sandy
I'm a little more than halfway through ... found another problem. Something is referenced to Answers.com, but Answers.com is a mirror of Wikipedia, so that's not a reference (circular reasoning). See if you can find another one for that one? Sandy 00:43, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
OK, that's all I can do. Don't know what to do about 2 and 21, as they are personal websites. Good luck with it ! Sandy 01:01, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
Yes, you should reference the book (and remember you must include the page number on books). Just put it inside the ref brackets, with Last name, First name. Name of book. Publisher, location, copyright date, p. number. Then, if you want people to be able to also see the online version, put it at then end in a link like [ url full-text ] Sandy 04:09, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
Reference 8 (Menloschool.org) should have a more "reliable" primary source, like a news source or book ... keep up the good work! Sandy 04:47, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Jaranda and Superman Lives[edit]

User:Luka Jačov blocking[edit]

Jaranda I think you blocked User:Luka Jačov unjustly cause his first two edits are different then from his second two. Also you should check User:Telex's blacmailing on Talk Page of Macedonia. Do acknowledge. Thank you--TheFEARgod 21:42, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

quote: "if you persist in removing the Greeks from here, I will be removing any reference to Macedonians from Greece" (by User:Telex) --TheFEARgod 21:44, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

3rr is any 4 non vandalism reverts and Luka Jačov has 4 similar reverts, they all involved removing greek from the aricle so that 3rr, I would look at the Telex situation. Thanks Jaranda wat's sup 21:48, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, doesn't 3RR count for SAME reverts?--TheFEARgod 21:55, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

No from WP:3RR:

Reverting, in this context, means undoing the actions of another editor or other editors in whole or part. It does not necessarily mean taking a previous version from history and editing that. A revert may involve as little as adding or deleting a few words or even one word. Even if you are making other changes at the same time, continually undoing other editors' work counts as reverting. "Complex partial reverts" refer to reverts that remove or re-add only some of the disputed material while adding new material at the same time, which is often done in an effort to disguise the reverting. This type of edit counts toward 3RR, regardless of the editor's intention.

Luka Jačov reverts all involved removing greek from the article so that violates 3rr, as for Telex, I would give an warning. Thanks Jaranda wat's sup 22:04, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Ah, so that's what he was referring to (you can see me on the talk page enquiring into the blackmail accusation, I didn't know what he was talking about). I'm sorry he took it that way - I was making the point that the existence both minority communities is based on the same (or similar) sources, so it would be inconsistent to not mention the Greek community but only the Macedonian. What I was basically telling him that it should be either both or none - anything else is double standards. There may have been a better way of saying it though :-( --Tēlex 22:13, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Well he didnt know it applies for similar reverts aswell so could u be little loosen up. Thank you,--TheFEARgod 22:27, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Backlog?[edit]

You recently added an admin backlog tag to Category:Protected deleted pages... but it doesn't seem like a 'work' category. The instructions on the page say to add {{deletedpage}} to pages in the category... but that template adds pages to the category. So following the instructions will never 'clear the backlog'. --CBD 23:18, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Questioning Recent Deletion[edit]

Hi Jaranda, you recently speedily deleted a page that I wrote called "Rhino Mocks". I thought that it was genuinely useful, can you please tell me why you deleted it? BTW, I have no association with Rhino Mocks other than being a user. Curyous1 02:39, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Lack of content, article was basiclly a instruction manual, I would undelete if you add more content. Thanks Jaranda wat's sup 02:53, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

A little advice[edit]

Here is a little advice. When you block accounts, don't use anything except a standard edit summary. You're encouraging more vandalism accounts to be created by using provocative edit summaries. Chicken Wing 02:42, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Umm, alot of admins do that, anyways most of my summarries are go away and stuff like that, user... is silly, block summarrys don't encourage more vandalism accounts, blocking them in anyway does. Jaranda wat's sup 02:49, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

I somewhat agree with Chicken Wing; while I sometimes use weird summaries just to amuse myself (my personal favourite was "blocked "Johnny NCV WOW Milkman Communism Pelican S. (contribs)" with an expiry time of indefinite (looked at me funny)"), sometimes with "sigh", "you are starting to annoy me," and blocked a JewsDidWTC account with "No they didn't, terrorists did," I wonder if you're inadvertently "feeding the trolls." CanadianCaesar Et tu, Brute? 03:53, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
But I'll add, you are doing a good job blocking these guys. CanadianCaesar Et tu, Brute? 03:55, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I want to add that, too. I'm not attacking you, and I think you're doing a good job of making blocks. I'm just saying that by basically talking to the vandals, that acknowledges them and gives them a reason to keep creating vandal accounts. Chicken Wing 15:45, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Why exactly?[edit]

My Mad at the World entry was deleted without even enough time to contest the deletion much less properly finish the entry to show the band's merit. The user who requested the deletion in fact deleted the contestation I put there with a note claiming that I did not read the directions for the request for deletion. However, the directions clearly state that I can contest this request which will give me TIME to explain my reasons. In fact I was in the process of doing so when I found that the article had unscrupulously been deleted. Why? Cultureshocklewis 06:14, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Kent-Meridian High School[edit]

Per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kent-Meridian High School, I just thought you'd like to know that the consensus for High School articles now appears to be swinging back in favor of deletion. User:CAYA[edit]

I hate bringing this back to you, but I'm not sure what else to do. CAYA spent most of his 24hr block continuing his edit war on Foo Fighters using the sockpuppet LOTAFOO (talk · contribs). The other editors of the Foo Fighters article are pretty much at a loss as to where to go from here. Any advice you could offer would be immensely appreciated. -- ChrisB 03:22, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Many thanks for your help! Would it be okay if I contact you if he returns as a sockpuppet? (I meant to ask this earlier, figuring it was inevitable, and it's already happened: diff.) -- ChrisB 18:03, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Blocked pages: Fazed[edit]

Now, I don't have much ability to write pages, but I know a few people around Fazed who do. We were interested in having a wiki page, but it's a locked page. When I took a look at the deletion log, I got the feeling that many of the original entries were written by banned members of the forum. I just wanted to find out if this would be reversable, and we could get a chance to have someone with some experience in write wikipedia pages from the site do the write up for it. -- ChocolateJesus 05:25, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

I deleted the deletedpage tag. Try to make a better page other than the recreated nonsense. Thanks Jaranda wat's sup 05:30, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Worthy use of your new admin powers[edit]

Congratulations on your recent granting of admin powers. I would like to draw your attention to a worthy use of those powers - the closing of copyvio reports listed on WP:CP. As you'll see there are many tens of such reports that need dealing with each day, and the backlog is barely being kept under control despite a couple of us spending lots of time working on them. The process is pretty easy and sorting a few only takes a little time and with a group of people helping, we can keep the backlog under control easily - just review the article & the source to ensure it is a copy, and then delete. Any help would certainly be appreciated - any questions, ask away. Kcordina Talk 09:03, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Dwyane Wade[edit]

Hi. I'm wondering what my options are here. I started at topic at Talk:Dwyane Wade about the officiating controversy, but the anonymous user who makes the most edits about it hasn't discussed anything there. I even left a message at the user's talk page, and the editing continued. He contends that the information is true, which it may be, but that's not my point.

The user's edit history leads me to believe him to be from Dallas, which only strengthens my beliefs that he is not acting in good faith; also, he has not made the same effort to add this information to any other equally or more appropriate article. I don't want to be the only one who's reverting him, and I'd end up 3rr'ing constantly. At some point, does a refusal to discuss the issue turn his edits into vandalism? I mean, what should I be doing here? --Maxamegalon2000 22:13, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

New guy appears to want to contest the speedy deletion of Talifan which you deleted. Hydnjo's response to the blocking proposal[edit]

I thank one and all - Jarandal, Antandrus, Titoxd, Xaosflux, TenOfAllTrades, mboverload, PseudoSudo, Knowledge Seeker, Haukurth, Deathphoenix, Zzyzx11, Tyrenius, Zscout370, AnnH, Rick Block, Tyrenius (again), Zscout370 (again) and NoSeptember for your support.

To Jeffrey O. Gustafson who initiated this block request I ask why? We have had no interaction until now so how do you come to this requested action at WP:AN? Did you come across my account during your own research or are you acting as a proxy for another admin/user with whom I've caused to be angry with me? In reviewing your contributions I see no such "letter of the law" before now and so I feel singled out by you and I have no clue as to why - that to me is most disturbing. If you've come to this action on your own then should I be always wary of another admin challenging the legitimacy of my account?

For TenOfAllTrades who advised me not to worry and Rick who made me laugh I give special thanks, you've helped me to not take this so personally. And to Jeff, thanks for being courteous in informing me of your action and for letting me feel that your heart wasn't for blocking me.
Except for my one explanation above, I haven't edited for a few days now so as to allow y'all to comment about this based on my history of contribution rather than my reaction to it.

I wanted to say all of this before it all goes to archive heaven. I still have a lingering concern that this may arise again and don't want to go through WP life looking over my shoulder or worrying that I might piss-off some admin and cause another inquiry about the legitimacy of my account. If any of you who have been so gracious as to take the time to support me here have any suggestions to prevent such an action, please drop your thoughts on my talk or by email.

Finally, on a personal note to all, I never ever expected so much supportive response from all of you. I know that I've been moody at times and have spoken in ways that I have regretted the next day. I hoped otherwise but it seemed that those unfortunate responses might end up being my legacy as they were the foremost in my mind. And so far as this being a "role account", I think that I'll let the descriptions of AnnH and NoSeptember (both above) stand as the most intuitive descriptions of this account. My (and our) warmest regards to all of you for your understanding and outward support for the continuation of hydnjo's user account and future contributions. Again, my delighted and humble thanks :-) --hydnjo talk 02:03, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

addendum: Jeff, I was confused at the outset in that I wasn't aware of the "role account" policy and then after becoming aware I was frustrated that I had made so many edits which could mislead someone to the conclusion that my account was a role account. I'm sorry that in my zeal to understand your actions that I posed the possibility that you were acting at someone else's behest. I have no evidence of that and it was improper of me to even mention that such a bizarre conspiracy was possible. I find myself guilty of "blaming the messenger" and posting an inappropriate comment about your motivation.

As for my account, I want to state that it is not a role account and I apologize for leaving the impression that it is one. "hydnjo" is the signature that I commonly use for much of my correspondence and thought it to be appropriate when I first started my WP account. The portmanteau is an acknowledgment of our shared existence and not an indication that Heidi and I share in editing at WP.

I thank you for your courtesy in informing me at the outset of the discussion at WP:AN and for your compliments about my contributions. The comments in my response were made in the shadow of my own frustration with my having left a trail of edits that could easily be construed as having come from either Heidi or myself. I sincerely apologize to you for making any suggestion as to your motivation in bringing up a legitimate policy question. You have a genuine concern for the orderly behavior of our editors and I thank you for initiating this discussion and providing me the opportunity to explain the nature of my account. --hydnjo talk 22:51, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

[2] You could put up some basic info about them from that link. The prose is improved, but the referencing is still weak: for example, where's a reference for the Tom Brokaw comment? It's better, but you've really got to go through the *entire* article and check every single statement as to whether it needs a refernce. I'm on a slow dialup connection (my house was hit by lightening), so I just can't quickly check things, but every time I look, there is still info that is not referenced. Here is one paragraph:
In 1997, Jennifer López played Selena in the film of the same name directed by Gregory Nava, which opened with mostly positive reviews[citation needed] (What is meant by "mostly positive"? what were the negative? Give us some sources, so we can see these "mostly positive"). More than 12,000 people auditioned for a role in the film. [19] The film stirred controversy in the Mexican-American community,[citation needed] since López is Puerto Rican and played the role of a singer of Mexican descent. But Selena's fans supported the biography,[citation needed] and López's role in the film helped elevate her career.[citation needed] Although López would succeed as a pop star herself a few years later, Selena's voice was dubbed in for all the songs in the movie.[citation needed] For her role in the film, López was nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Actress.[20]
That's just a sample paragraph. Remember, she's a star who was murdered young, and all kinds of legends can grow: you've got to be sure everything is sourced. How do I know Selena's fans liked the movie? How do I know it help JLo's career? Etc ... Sandy 03:55, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks...same song and dance[edit]

I stated I had never edited their articles and I haven't...the nonsense about me creating a name there and also one for Ed Poor is also nonsense. I guess that this is now the second time for this and it's someone using AOL...I am pretty sure I know who it is. Thanks for your efforts.--MONGO 06:47, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
