The RPI Players (Players) is a student-run community theater at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York. The Players is currently in the middle of their 78th season during the 2007-2008 academic year. The Players has produced more than 260 productions in almost 80 years.

History of the RPI Players[edit]

(from the RPI Players website:) "Theatre at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has a long history. Records trace the founding of a drama club to 1896. This drama club was reformed in 1921 and again in 1929. The best record in existence is dated November 25, 1929 and states: "The first regular meeting of the R.P.I. Dramatic Club was held Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1929 in the Proudfit Building." And thus a club was born. The meeting minutes dated March 12, 1930 also contain a significant point in the club's history: "The question of a name for the club was brought up and a motion was passed to call it hereafter "The R.P.I. Players". These records exist today, as excerpted from the handwritten meeting minutes of the club. Throughout the history of the Players, they have inhabited several locations. Three of these locations are buildings that they have occupied the longest and considered home: The Old Gymnasium, the 15th Street Lounge, and the RPI Playhouse."

Committees[edit]

There are quite a few committees, official and unofficial, who keep things run smoothly in the Playhouse. The two bigger committees being the Executive Committee (E-Comm) and the Technical Committee (T-Comm).

E-Comm[edit]

The E-Comm consists of President of the RPI Players, Business Manager of the RPI Players, Technical Director of the RPI Players and of the RPI Playhouse, the Secretary/Historian of the RPI Players, and the Membership Chair of the RPI Players. One term for a member of the E-Comm is one year, generally starting the day after the spring musical closes and ending the night the spring musical closes. There is a transition ceremony during the Players Picnic that occurs the day after closing night of the spring musical.

T-Comm[edit]

The T-Comm is headed by the respective season's Technical Director. The T-Comm is comprised of students who are chairs in their respective technical departments. There are chairs for: Sound, Lights, Properties, Costumes, and Set.
