Since the 1980s Dan Gross had been using the handle Vdub on various Newsgroups and on services like Forum and IRC.

In the mid-90s, Dan switched to "Vdub144" due to increasing competition towards use of the name "vdub". The 144 reflects "12 dozen" or a "gross."
