The Bayview Hotel is a historic building in Aptos, California.

History[edit]

The building was built in 1878 by José Arano, who later called himself Joseph Arano, although he probably came from the Pasque region. Arano married Maria de la Augustia Castro, youngest daughter of Rafael de Jesus Castro (1803–1878) who owned the Rancho Aptos. Sugar magnate Claus Spreckels was an early guest, along with native Hawaiian king Kalakaua in 1881. Spreckels later developed his own hotel and a beet sugar business. He originally called it the Anchor House. The first floor contained a store, post office, and bar room^[2]

In 1944 it was moved about 100 feet (30 m) back from the railroad tracks. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places listings in Santa Cruz County, California on March 30, 1992 as site 92000259. It is used a an 12-room bed and breakfast hotel and Italian restaurant. Located at 8041 Soquel Drive, it is near the entrance to the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park which includes the epicenter of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
