Thomas Aquinas

Surely you realised that Wiki would have an article on Thomas Aquinas? I have redirected Thomas Aquinas Dumb Ox to the existing article. But please rescue anything useful from its history (if nothing else the fact that he was called Dumb Ox!) and add it to the Thomas_Aquinas article. -- RHaworth 15:34:42, 2005-07-26 (UTC)

Yo. Thought I should tell you that I've nominated an article you started, Miriam Hyman for deletion. It's sad and all, but wikipedia is not a memorial. Proto t c 11:17, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for uploading Image:Neckarteries.gif, Image:Neckveins.gif, Image:Lowerfalls.jpg, Image:Webinterneticonmactalk.png, Image:Havasufalls1.jpg, and probably some more images (please check your contributions more thoroughly than I did). Nuttall letter L

Damn you're good! Martin - The non-blue non-moose 10:58, 14 August 2005 (UTC)

I was working on L also. Just a small nit-pick: there was no need, IMO, to create a redirect from Louis Especially. This was one of several cases where the processing bot spotted a capitalized word at the beginning of a line, and incorrectly interpreted that as an article. Nobody would look for Louis of Conti using that name. Its just a small piece of redirect noise, but I think we can use common sense here.
Anyway, congratulations on powering through these. I'll be making a few small edits. David Brooks 15:59, 14 August 2005 (UTC)

Stub fixing

Thanks for fixing the stub templates on several of my articles, however I do suggest that you Register an account at Wikipedia instead of using an anonymous IP address. Source info?

Image:Adb.jpg has no source info, but another Xanadu photo you uploaded says it is from your personal collection. Can you clarify.

BTW, I visited Xanadu as a kid and I'm a huge fan of it and of the concept (failed/flawed or not, it rocked!).--Jimbo Wales 10:27, 18 September 2005 (UTC)

  • Good to hear you're a fan of Xanadu. It's from the same collection, you can tag is as necessary. Thanks — Wackymacs 11:51, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
It would be better for the historical record if you could go to the image link and add whatever info you can, yourself. When it was taken, who took it, what sort of camera, etc. Could you do that? It would be much appreciated.
I'm also deleting a photo from Amelio's article with no source -- we can't have photos with no source.--Jimbo Wales 09:35, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

On Stub Fixing

Hey Josh! How's it going? Am I to assume I edited some of your stubs? As an Illinoisan, I was reading over Land of Lincoln-related links, and I couldn't help but notice some of my state's governors, et al, are either barren of information, or things are just all topsy-turvy and grossly wrong. Where is King Edward VII School? Is it on Queen Victoria Boulevard, situated between King Edward VI School and right next door to the now-defunct King Edward VIII School (which closed down, I'm told, due to its merger with the Wallis Simpson School)? Signed, Your American Cousin ( 18:50, 23 September 2005 (UTC)) (Friday, 23.Sept.2005)

If you nominate articles for speedy deletion please use {{db|reason}} rather than putting the reason in the edit summary. Try again with Sanat Va Honar. Stephen Mantz must go via AfD simply because of how long it has survived. -- RHaworth 10:58, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

Sanat Va Honar

Black watch image

Could I ask you where you obtained Image:Sinclairblackwatch.jpg? It looks rather like a scan of a magazine advert, in which case it would be copyright material, not suitable for CC licensing. -- Bob Mellish 18:22, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

  • Ah, thanks.. Since it's from an advert, we can claim fair use, I think. However, the image should be tagged with the {{promotional}} template, not the {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} one. --Bob Mellish 18:34, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

Mac OS bomb symbol

Hi, I've replaced the screenshot of a bomb symbol you uploaded, Image:Macosbomb.jpg, with a PNG version Image:Macosbomb.png, which takes 3% of the space and is cleaner. I've nominated the JPG for deletion. Hope this is OK. Mysid (talk) 13:22, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

Computer Cooling?

I saw that you set up a redirect from Liquid Cooling of Computers to Computer cooling as a result of the AfD decision. Did you / do you plan to merge the info in? I haven't looked to see how similar the two articles are, other than remembering the LCC article had a bunch of additional info in it (however useful it was).

If you were planning on merging then I won't go through the trouble of checking. :)

--Syrthiss 17:32, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

  • I haven't planned on merging, since the article was in such a bad state and the article it now redirects to is much more informative. — Wackymacs 17:36, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

thanks for message

Hi Wackymacs-

Thanks for the message you left me. I had put a number of anonymous edits on the Alphonso Lingis article. (I simply haven't had the time yet to sit down and create an account and so forth, but will do that soon.)

In the meantime, there is a problem with that page (I am not the one who created it, by the way)...

The page does not show up if you search for Lingis, but only if you search for Alphonso Lingis. There must be an easy way to fix that, but I'm really an amateur and don't know many of the basics yet.

Apple Macintosh

Apple Macintosh is the Article Improvement Drive of the Week! Thanks for nominating this article, back in September. Will you join in on improving it? Mamawrites 00:01, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

Silly me, you have already invited lots of people to contribute! I found your traces on their talk pages. I have finished off the rest of the list. I'll look forward to working with you over at Apple Macintosh. Mamawrites 00:11, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for putting it nicely. I do understand that people have different ways of doing things, but 30 edits in a row is absolutely maddening. How do I figure out what went wrong where (pardon the alliteration)? I do agree that he has things to contribute, and I find some of what he does useful. At first I started picking through the edits, opening multiple windows (tabs aren't good enough sometimes), pasting them into MS Word, and then comparing and contrasting various bits of damage. Last night when I asked him to please try to condense into a few edits, he comes back and bangs out thirty more. It's driving me nuts!

However, I also find some of it not only in a point of view, but very poorly worded, almost as if it were someone with English as their second language. I have addressed this on his page, and I hope he responds to it all right.

As for doing things in multiple sections (ok, well I've already addressed it, but here's addendum :D), that's what the Preview button is for. Have you taken a look at his posts? He either makes radical changes (true, some of them are more than welcome), or he makes tiny edits to the point where I literally can't see what he did, even with a comparison chart pulled up. It almost looks as if he's' double, triple and quadruple-posting the same edit. I'm sure that's an accident, but I think it needs to stop.

Don't you find it the least bit frustrating? If you'd like, I'll pull out some of his edits which I find distressing.

The only reason I'm not actually mad at him, is because he means well, on top of the fact that he does have things to add.

P.S., this is not a chronic type of thing for me, to be honest this is the first person whom I have come across that continues to do edits like this. 99% of the time, when I read new edits, I find myself smiling and nodding at the new material added, or rolling my eyes in agreement with the grammar or criteria changes made to clearly absurd edits.

Xanadu house

Glad you found my update on the Xanadu house helpful unlike some critics (Mel Etitis) of my attempt to update the world of it's fate. I was there they 2nd day they were tearing it down. You can find pics here:

The set of edits on which I was commenting were these — the removal of a large chunk of text, with no explanation. Incidentally:
When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labelled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:
Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

When you leave the edit summary blank, some of your edits could be mistaken for vandalism and may be reverted, so please always briefly summarize your edits, especially when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 08:16, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

Fair use can only be claimed for images used in articles. That image is used only on one of your user pages. Therefore, it has been tagged {{or-fu}} and may be deleted in seven days. Superm401 | Talk 03:19, 23 October 2005 (UTC)

Hi there. I see you've tagged a couple of articles for speedy deletion as "advertisement/self promotion". This isn't usually speediable unless the article is a single external link or a blatant platform for one. WP:VAND does allow pure spam to be speedied, but I don't think that's what these articles were. Better to take them to AfD in future, as I just did with Gamers LTD and Game Freaks 365. Thanks. -Splashtalk 04:19, 23 October 2005 (UTC)

Red screen of death

Please take a look at Talk:Red screen of death#Inline text example. Are you going to delete the recreations from Blue screen of death, too? --tyomitch 15:04, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

I removed it because there is a screenshot on the same page that is exactly the same, so what are the advantages of having your re-created example on the page too? If there were advantages to it, I wouldn't have removed it - but there aren't, because of the screenshot. On the Blue screen of death page there are not screenshot replacements for every re-creation, so no. — Wackymacs 15:23, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your responses to my two questions. Let me know how your OS X Architecture article goes. I wonder whether you can safely omit 'Mac' from 'Mac OS X', after the first occurrence? Tony 19:29, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Maybe you've seen the article on iMac. Various people have been tinkering with it, and I put it through Peer Review a month ago (although nothing much came up). I'd like to get it to FA standard by the end of November. Tony 19:39, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

I'll go through it bit by bit. Sometimes I can do a lot, sometimes I have to edit for my clients. Tony 19:55, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

The Xanadu article isn't well written; repetitive, not engaging. For a FA it needs to be expanded in scope, too. Tony 20:25, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Hi Wackymacs

I know that we've only just met, but I thought I'd alert you to the fact that User Redwolf kindly nominated me for adminship last week, which I accepted.

Regrettably, this has coincided with a stouch with several huge egos whose FAC I helped on, and then critiqued after they'd trashed my entire contribution. I normally shun conflict, but here, I'm emersed in it, and I feel utterly destroyed. One of the protagonists appears to be drumming up support for his cause on other people's talk pages.

If the nomination fails Monday night, which appears likely now since the 75/25 voting balance is borderline, I'll be trashing my personal page and not returning: it's just too embarrassing and unpleasant to go on.

So, if you have the inclination, the war zone is at: [2]

Thanks Tony 01:21, 29 October 2005 (UTC)

It's really nice to receive messages such as yours, when I hardly know you. Thanks. Not inclined to withdraw nomination at this stage, but I am inclined to walk out of WP. My email is tony1 at iinet dot net dot au, if ever required. Tony 20:18, 29 October 2005 (UTC)

Josh, I didn't want to leave, no way; but after this RfA process, there's so much shit about, both within my mind and others, that I can't possibly stay. I'm in damage-causing mode now, as you probably saw. I don't know how long that will last, but I want to make a proper scene about the flawed process. Maybe someone will take notice, who knows. It desperately needs to be depersonalised and made more confidential for both nominee and reviewers.

I'm very sad about no longer being able to interact with people I like and respect here. Gotta move on, tho. Tony 20:54, 29 October 2005 (UTC)

I don't know you that well, but you definitely deserve one of these... Spawn Man 08:45, 29 October 2005 (UTC)

I agree that voting no on edit summaries is pretty dumb. However you did not help the situation by jumping around, taking everything personal and making pretty rude comments. But ah well, nobody is perfect :) Even admins or candidates for admins. How to withdraw? I don't know, need to read policies, but most likely you need to cross out the "I accept!" and then do something else (if you seriously want to withdraw). I am just very sorry it ends this way...
I hope it won't cast a shadow on WP and you will be a good contributor in the future. I would challenge those who voted "no" by being the most perfect user thay have ever seen. Prove them all wrong, very very wrong. That's my "I dare you" to you! :) Renata3 14:30, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

Hey there,

As you might have noticed there has been some extensive copyediting/cleanup over at Apple Macintosh, and as you are one of the largest contributors of original content to the article, I couldn't help but notice that you did not cite your sources (you cited one.) It would be extremely helpful if you could drop me a line on my talk page with the names of some of the sources you used. Thanks a lot, TDS (talkcontribs) 00:34, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

Hello Wackymacs,

I have not met you before, I don't believe, but saw your RFA today. I am sorry it didn't go as well as you hoped. You note on your userpage that you do not wish admin privs at this time; I just wanted to let you know that as the subject of an RFA, you have the right to request that the nomination be formally withdrawn and delisted from the main RFA page, if you'd rather it not remain up for the remaining time. Would you like that? If you would, just post a request on the RFA talk page and it will be done for you. Kind regards encephalon 04:04, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

I hope to see you back at RFA in the not too distant future. Meanwhile I hope that you will keep up your fine editing. Regards, --hydnjo talk 18:41, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

Hi there

You popped up on my watch list and it occured to me that I never responded to one of your posts to me (which I always do). It's history now, but I thought it was a fair neutral and left as neutral. I looked at your contrib's and see you're doing excellent on summaries (though maybe take it easy on the minor button).

Also, thought I'd comment on Bill Gates as you seem to have some comp knowledge. It really needs a thorough going-over--perhaps, even a user page start-up and subsequent full replacement. I tried to tone down the criticism, such as the BS about his charity work. He could wind-up achieving more in this regard than his achievements at MS (not an over-statement) particularly if he's instrumental in a malaria vaccine. He seems to be the one person in the world capable of pulling this off at the moment. Cheers, Marskell 16:37, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

Hi Josh,

I own the company Burning Vision that I see you've helped make changes to. Just a quick couple of questions: Can you change the v of Vision to a capital, I can't see how to do it. Also, I have added some info to 'Sheila Ferguson' entry but it doesn't link back to the Burning Vision page where I'd hope it would, just says Wikipedia doesn't have a page for it? Featured article for Decemeber 25th

I noticed that you have listed yourself as an atheist Wikipedian. You will probably be interested to know that Brian0918 has nominated Omnipotence paradox as the front page article for December 25th. You can vote on this matter here. The other suggestion being supported by others for that date is Christmas, although Raul654 has historically been against featuring articles on the same day as their anniversary/holiday. 1997 Pacific hurricane season

Hi Wackymacs, I combined a bunch of sections on the 1997 Pacific hurricane season article, splitting it up by month instead of by storm. Could you take a look and see if that meets your objection on FAC? --Spangineeres (háblame) 19:50, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Great! I think its FAC nomination is still active though; it's just at the bottom of the page. --Spangineeres (háblame) 20:01, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Xanadu House

I'm still working on a more thorough look at Xanadu House's Featured Article nomination, and it may be a few days before I finish (I'm doing gradschool apps at the moment). I see that you've put a lot of work into the article, and I'm trying to help out with some of my stylistic concerns. This is a very interesting topic; I hadn't known anything about experimental architecture. But I wanted to mention now that the comparative lack of citation is going to be one of my objections. You seem to have enough References, but the article doesn't contain very many inline citations. Ideally, I would hope for specific factual information (dates, visitor numbers, etc.) to be cited; a page number would be optimal. Statements about the designer's inspirations and influences could also use citations, or even notes in the text ("In his autobiography, Masters indicated that he was inspired by the Kensington House (footnote)"). Those kinds of in-text citations can be particularly helpful in flagging information that's only available from a single first-person source (journals, interviews, biographies). If you have any questions about citation or footnoting style, I'll be happy to help out. -- Creidieki 06:14, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip. I cleaned it up there and elsewhere.

your links in the Patrick White article

Hi Josh

Thanks for your edits, but the links, in my view, are undesirable. Linking 'author' and 'English language' turns WP into a dictionary; '20th century' is a low-value chronological link, not recommended under WP policy. See Wikipedia:Make only links relevant to the context, Wikipedia:Manual of Style (links)#Internal links and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)#Date formatting.

High-value links are part of WP's uniqueness, and of great benefit. But I firmly believe that only high-value links should be used.

So you like the novels of Patrick White?

Tony 14:57, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

Josh—sorry, did I not reply to your earlier message? Thank you. I'll have a look at the Macintosh group, but I'd rather minimise my involvement with WP. (The giant image of a scrotum that was put on my userpage, 7 Novemeber, was the last straw.) Tony 23:36, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

Peer review

After days of fixing the page on The Care Bears Movie II: A New Generation, I am asking you to determine whether it is eligible for featured article status. Read its peer review page and leave any comments inside it.

Someone needs Leonard Maltin's Movie and Video Guide to complete the article (with his comments on the film from that book). Do you, or does anyone you know, have a copy? --Slgrandson 23:34, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

Josh—Hope my edits didn't offend you; it's a good article. In connection with Patrick White, if you ever get around to reading one of his novels, my recommendation is The fringe of leaves (1976). Coming just after his Nobel prize, he was happy with himself, and it shows in the writing. All about the prententiousness of the colonial British class system, and the iniquities of race and gender. It's surely out of print now, but was published in the US, and will be in some libraries. Tony 02:18, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

Delrina article and FAC

Thanks for checking up on the status of the Delrina article. I didn't want to do a Hollaback Girl and re-submit prior to adding more material to the article and giving it a thorough copyedit. Last night I added more material to the Berkeley Systems v. Delrina case, and over the past week have been adding and clarifying points derived from the old Corporate Reports I dug out at the local Reference Library.

I am just making certain that the next time I submit, it'll be harder to reject. :-)

Not to worry, will let you know when I think it is up to snuff (possibly tonight if I get the time).

Thank You

Thank you for your speedy review of White Mountain Art. I have expanded the introduction as you suggested. Regarding your second comment, could you expand a little. Do you feel a short list of the more significant artists is unnecessary or without substance? I'm thinking of a section on The Characteristics of the Artists. This would then incorporate various artists about whom I know and understand the style. Thanks again. JJ 13:11, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Apple Mac article

The only way this is going to pass is if you trim back the size—just a gesture might be enough to persuade Raul654 that the critics' objections have been taken seriously. So it doesn't have to go down to 32 or 40, but at least a few Kb down; then a note to that effect on the FAC page, saying how it's improved the article, thank you, etc. All we want is the promotion, eh? Tony 02:25, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

Windows XP

I tried to rewrite the lead, and I killed another list. I'm not sure what your objections are, specifically — what are they? The article now has only two lists (down from three), and I've killed the useless trivia from the lead (which no longer starts with "as of..."). Johnleemk | Talk 15:46, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

Celine Dion

This is probably a bother, but could you please take another look at the Céline Dion article. Ive taken the comments at the last FA and have tried to address them: Ive found many print sources, about 4 Books, more authoritative reviews:New york Times,, Los Angeles Times etc. Ive addressed her music, changes in sounds/genres, motivation etc. at the end of each sub-section, and Ive also added a "Image and Celebrity status" section at the bottom. Ive sent it to peer review for two days, but no reply. Comments would be appreciated. Thanks. Oran e (t) (c) (e-mail) 02:22, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

3D Monster Maze

Thank you very much for your comments at the FAC. I believe I've addressed your concerns, but please look at the FAC entry and my responses, and, of course, the changes in the article, to see what else should be done. The vaguest one (being short) might still apply — please tell if you still feel it's too short, and give directions for further expansions, if possible. BACbKA 23:13, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi again! the article has grown since then, and I have since absorbed some of the games wikiproject wisdom which made the structure more close to what is recommended there. It would be great if you could come in and contribute or at least comment on the article talk page — I would like to resubmit to the peer review eventually, as you recommended, after all the current criticisms have been addressed. --BACbKA 15:44, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. Encouraged by you, I've submitted for the peer review first, just to be sure. Please have a quick look — there are three major issues to discuss possible cleanup/improvement that have been identified so far; if you could state your opinion there on the talk page, it would be great. One of them is a language issue that I'd especially like native speakers like you to address (regarding the 2nd/3rd person disharmony and what to do about it if it indeed exists to a native speaker's taste). TIA! --BACbKA 22:17, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

I suppose. I've always been on forums with double, triple even quadruple posters, and they've always driven me up the wall. The problem though, is that if someone or something (dum, dum, dum! ...ok that was dumb, so to speak) removes something and we find out about it say, a week later, we're going to have to wade through hundreds of his posts to find out where it happened. Do you understand what I mean?

Though yes, I do agree it's sort of dumb to argue... that's why I'm trying to reason :D

Grand Canyon

Hi, I spent 5 hours getting the images perfect and beautiful on the grand Canyon. They were perfect. On your edit summary, you wrote cleaned up, but it looks like you made it dirty. All the perfect images are smaller and in disarray, some don't macth their sections and some are too small. Also, the great panaramic shot is now a tiny pice of junk dislocated in the upper right hand corner. I think you had good intentions, and thanks for trying to make it better, but i'm going to revert back to the version where everything was perfect. Tobyk777 00:59, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

Hey, I'm not sure if you're an administrator or not, but either way, you seem to know what you're doing. As such, I have a bit of a question. There are two things I would like to suggest for all people on the "Wikiproject Macintosh team" to have, one being more realistic, the other being nice to have and very helpful. The first, and more realistic of the two, is Mactracker. You've probably heard of it, might even have it. In case you don't know what it is, it basically has detailed information on every Mac ever made (not Apple IIs and the like, but every Macintosh), as well as some information on OSes, displays, printers, etc. It's an incredibly useful tool.

Also, Andy Hertzfeld's "Revolution in The Valley" is incredibly informative, and a fun read, though it does cost $25 US. Just some suggestions. It's 2:00 in the morning so if this is a ridiculously stupid idea, blame it on the time ^_^

Could you give some examples of what you mean by incorrect information? I mean, I've found a few mistakes, but not many. Know what really tickled me about the latest version of MacTracker? I've been using it for about five years... and I recently (well a few months ago) added to the Mac OS 9 article.. I download the new version of Mactracker, look at their info on OS 9... and there's stuff in it that I wrote on Wikipedia! How weird is that? It was quite a shock to me, I mean, since it's like.. an actual program, and I've been using it since like 2000. Admittedly, I had hacked it up a bit and added/changed some information back when it was at version 2.x on OS 9 with ResEdit.. but this is different :P

Isn't Revolution in The Valley awesome? I mean.. I know it's kind of sad that I read it, but I thought a lot of it was hilarious. How about Jobs' take on the next 3M machine? :P Or his asking whether or not the guy would urinate on his desk ^_^

Actually I really don't like the man, but those are some pretty funny stories. Incidentally, I forgot that they're actually online, so that would be a lot more feasible for the "mac team" to get "ahold" of. "Quotations" are fun. And overused.

Erm.. anyway.. yeah I can't remember what I was going to say -.-

Eh.. oh yeah. Sorry to double-post, but I remembered what I wanted to say >_<

I think it would be really interesting (and in a way, important) to talk about Apple's struggle with keeping costs of the original Mac down (as I'm sure you'll remember this is found in RITV). Their eventually being forced to upgrade to 128KB of RAM, 64KB ROM, and perhaps mention that they sort of cheated a wee bit by using the sole Fat Mac (512KB) in existence at their unveiling. I wouldn't personally really know how to implement it (or I probably would, but I hate reading huge structures of text like that and then trying to figure out how to integrate it).

Any thoughts?

P.S.. check my edits on Burrell Smith's page... I'm not sure if they're Wikipedia-legal or not >_>

Akeakamai & Macs

Thanks Josh for your wikification & categorization of the entry for akeakmai. I'm starting out, and your help was greatly appreciated.

I also noted that you're a Mac fan, and I had been considering going through some notable Mac-oriented websites and forums, primarily as defined by WP:WEB. I also saw that was not listed in wikipedia. In your opinion, is this corporation significant enough? They are a corporate domain name management/brand protection specialist, and are the folks in charge of registering, among other domains. Adrienne Clarkson

Hi, thanks for doing that work on the Adrienne Clarkson article. The only problem really is that the Awards section became melded so that it wasn't clear which awards were won and which she was nominated for(I put it back the way it was). Also, I had the references sectionalized so that they would't become mixed up (I will sort them out later - the page is really a work in process) - Clarkson is an interesting figure and I planned on making her page my Christmas project, but haven't had as much time as I would like Dowew 19:54, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

I have retaged the Governor General section for cleanup as it is still quite a mess - for example mentioning that she is Vivienne Poy's sister in law is useless in that section - and it really has no order it jumps from things like 9/11 to controversies about the cirumpolar tour. Like I said, I will work on it Dowew 20:00, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

Triumph of the Will

  • Thanks for your feedback. I have a few questions: how many references do you think I should have? Is there a way to put footnotes without having to list the publication at the end, or should I just resign myself to having two pages worth of footnotes? Regarding the images, most of them are stills from the film, which I believe is a valid fair usage. Please let me know if you believe otherwise. Palm_Dogg 21:03, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
    • OK, I've tried to follow your suggestions as best I can. If it's not too much trouble, please let me know if this works. --Palm_Dogg 01:59, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Merit badge article review

Hi. As I've noticed you provide lots of balanced constructive feedback on FACs, I was wondering if you could help me out. I have this article, Merit badge types (BSA) that went threw a peer review and then a FAC, but I withdrew it because it had little support. I've fixed all the objections except the bulleted lists, which most people didn't like. I'm having a real problem with this as the lists are examples and I'm having trouble making these good prose. There are 3 sets of lists, unaltered, in the "Errors vs Variations" section. In the "Examples of merit badge changes" section, you see what was a bulleted list is now unbulleted, a little more 'prosy', but seems to come off like an unbulleted list. If you could help with this, I'd greatly appreciate it. I don't want to resubmit it as a FAC until it's really good and I'm fairly sure it'll get a lot of support. Any help would be appreciated. blah 1, etc 2, note 3. Thats usually the kind of thing I do - good luck with getting your article featured" suggestion.... I think Apple Macintosh is pretty good; take a look at the changes we made! There was one comment on the talk page: the last two sections that I drew up on request have no references. We should fix this, and of course look over it again before it goes on the main page. And, yes, I'll check back to your userpage for the changes you said you'd make. --HereToHelp (talk) 20:26, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Also: do you mind if I revert the color change on the Apple portal? It's hard to see the edit links.--HereToHelp (talk) 20:37, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
I'll try, but I'm not sure there's a way to change the link color. If there is, I'll go ahead and change it.--HereToHelp (talk) 20:51, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
I can't get the colors to work the way I'd link, so I'll present you with the options; I want a second opinion.
  1. Leave the portal as is with the edit links barely visible;
  2. Go to another bar color, such as reverting to the first color; or
  3. This may not even work, but we could try changing the text color of the whole portal (say, to white) and then, if needed, change the background color, although white best fits Apple.
I think option two is best, and that another blue (like the aqua from the middle of the award box above, for instance) would work best.--HereToHelp (talk) 21:08, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Oh great: Romeo Bravo is breathing down my neck about those images on my userpage (that you, err, adopted). I've been in th middle of a fair use dispute over some templates, too; it seems (to me, at least) that no one knows what the deal is with fair use on userpages. The guideline says no, someone else said that it was wrong, and I just want to keep my icons (I worked hard on that; that formatting is original!). Do you know anything about this?--HereToHelp (talk) 04:45, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

That was my eventual goal. I currently have a couple more sources I had been planning to check for anything missing before taking the next step. Maybe also try to expand the early life section if at all possible. What do you think? — Laura Scudder 00:57, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
Yeah expanding the early life section is a good idea. More references would be good, few references will be used as an objection at FAC otherwise. Also, the Refs section should be a numbered list instead of bulleted because its footnotes. A picture for the 'In New Netherland' section would be a nice addition as well. Good luck! — Wackymacs 16:11, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
Unfortunately when using the same reference multiple times with Wikipedia:Footnote numbering the references just confuses everything unless you manually control the numbering, which then gets all messed up if a reference is added. — Laura Scudder 22:25, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
I've tried out using {{Hnote}} instead, which avoids the numbering issue entirely. I'll look around for an appropriate illustration to add to In New Netherland. Unfortunately, I've checked my sources and I think I might've exhausted all the early life information that's not total speculation or simply background on the Netherlands at the time. Unless you can think of anything else, I'll probably add a Further reading section and then nominate it as a FAC after I get back from an upcoming business trip. — Laura Scudder 22:52, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

By the way, I've finally nominated it as a featured article candidate. It's at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Adriaen van der Donck if you want to comment. It's been kinda dead so far. — Laura Scudder 02:06, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

We have to stop this guy. He's ruining the wiki! He may be "enforcing" the guideline, but he's going about it in completely the wrong way. He took out all of the WikiProject images! There's alink there to the dissscussion. And, Jtkiefer, if you wind up reading this, I'm not objecting to what you did so much as how you did it.--HereToHelp (talk) 03:30, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

Would you be willing to support my nominee for WP:COTW. The article is Invasion which is an important term for military knowledge. The current article however isn't at the same standard as the term is in modern and historic warfare though. If you'll be willing to support, I'll be greatful. Thanks. I've got a question for you, a bit off-topic, and pretty random. But, I've been finding people using "MiB" instead of "MB" more and more often when it comes to 1K=1024 bytes. I suppose I'm probably the only one, but this personally, for whatever reason, infuriates me. Does it bother you? I mean, what the heck! A graphics card with 256MiB GDDR1 RAM? There's so much wrong with that. A computer shipping with 1GiB RAM? WTF?

I'm just wondering if that bothers you at all. I've no real idea why it bugs me, but it practically sends me off the edge. Maybe because it just seems so ignorant... it's made to clear up something that most people reading these articles understand, and if they don't understand, it won't affect them anyway... just confuse them more. "Huh? What the hell's a MiB?" That was my reaction when I first saw it >_<

Lol... ever the diplomat huh? ;P I appreciate your response, however puerile my question was :)

Which macs do I have?

At the moment I'm surrounded by: PowerBook G4 12", PowerBook 3400, PowerBook 180c, PowerBook 160, PowerBook G3 Lombard, and a G4 Dual 1.25GHZ.

I do have other Macs like a Wallstreet G3 pictureframe, a beige G3 and a black 5500 though. There's a 7220, but it's disassembled.

Sorry for not replying to your messages; it couldnt be helped. I'm still unable to converse over the net. Apart from my computer system crashing (piece of crap), i have exams coming up in two weeks. These exams will have a very huge impact on my averages (and if they are below 85%, I wont be able to get into the university program I applying for). Therefore, i will be away until about February. I'll still pop in when I'm at the library at school (like now), but my activities will be limited. I'm not sure if the Celine Dion article will be featured just yet. Hi Wackymacs -- looks like you do a lot of good work around here. Apple Macintosh

Hey, relax. I'm not trying to get into an edit war. I just felt that you deleted things without incorporating them later in the article. It looked to me like you just deleted, and I didn't see any of it placed later. If you meant that the Motorola 68k processor debuting in the Mac is mentioned later, I'm aware, I wrote a fair part of that.. but I think it's always good to have it early. Customer Service wikification

Re the Wikification tag that you added to the Customer Service article. I've been mindful of this wikification guidleine: "Wikified articles link significant words to the corresponding article, provided that the corresponding article contains information that will help the reader to understand the original article". The original article had dozens of internal links that just made it harder to read. I would like to wikify more carefully. At this point, I have not read any article that, if linked to, would "help the reader understand the original article". If you've encountered any, please wikify accordingly. In the meantime, please consider removing your tag. Thanks; Leo CSReader 14:41, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

IMSAI 8080

Hi! Good updates to this article. One question: Where did you come up with the 1986 date? IMSAI was long dead and gone by '86; the company shut its doors in 1979. --jpgordon∇∆∇∆ 15:07, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

  • Ah, I see, from the "pre-history" on I'm not sure where Joe came up with that date; it doesn't make any sense. I'm not even sure any IMSAI 8080's were built after 1978 -- they laid off much of the staff (including me) in November '78. --jpgordon∇∆∇∆ 15:13, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
    • Well, I'm not sure how long production continued, since I wasn't there. The people should know more precisely, since they were in production (I was in engineering.) I don't have an IMSAI 8080. See, IMSAI was my first job out of college, and when I found out I was being laid off, I made the stupid mistake of returning the machine I had at home before I got my final paycheck, which was short a couple of thousand dollars. I was one of the more trivial victims of Bill Millard's greedy and selfish business practices. I don't have any photos of the things, though. One of these days I need to get just a front panel -- I don't need the actual computer.
    • Oooh. I just found this on According to a July 2002 e-mail from the IMSAI 8080 creator Joe Killian, I remember passing the 17,000 mark. I believe it never went past 20,000 [between December of 1975 and September 1979]. The remaining ones were made by Fischer-Freitas; I guess they could be included in the total count, but I'd be inclined to stick with the 1979 date. --jpgordon∇∆∇∆ 15:41, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

...even though I'm not adding much content at the moment, I'm basically cleaning up some stuff that I should have built in to begin with - and doing it badly as well, as it seems, since I've had to redo everything I've done just now because I can't see the obvious... But if we're ending up with a better, more flexible implementation of these timelines, it can't be bad. I think an Apple II one will indeed be next. -- grm_wnr Esc 20:54, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Requesting your input

Hi Wackymacs,

since the talk page of WP:MAC has yielded unsatishfying results as of late, I'm asking you directly: I'm pondering the merge of all Macintosh II articles into one, since they're all pretty short and we have Macintosh II series anyway. You can see what that would look like in my sandbox. I'd also change all incoming links to links to anchor links, of course. Basically, I'd be bold and just go ahead, but I'd like the input of at least one knowledgeable editor beforehand to make sure that's it not a completely outlandish idea. I'm also asking HereToHelp for a third opinion. Hopy to hear from you soon, -- grm_wnr Esc 13:27, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

Changes to Havasu Falls.

I'm quite confused as to why you changed my image of Havasu Falls back to the small, mediocre and not to mention pixilated image you've uploaded. I'd appreciate some sort of explanation. Thank you.

In your edit, all you did was add a Wikipedia sample image and change the existing image to a smaller size. — Wackymacs 06:36, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
Did you even look at the picture? I can assure you that I did not change the existing image to a smaller size. It is, in fact, larger and more current. I was just there 5 days ago so I don't appreciate the condescending tone of your comment. Also, it should be noted that this is the first page I have ever edited, as I have just become a member less than an hour ago so the sample image was a minor mistake that you are more than capable of fixing. I'd appreciate it if you actually take a look at the image I am going to upload again and realize that the picture is larger and of better quality.
Sorry, yeah I did notice it and I changed it back to your new photo. — Wackymacs 08:18, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Hurricane John's FAC

I would urge you to reconsider your comment on Hurricane John's FAC. You will see if you read the article that, unlike many other hurricanes with articles, John did not really cause any effects on land at all and is notable instead for holding a few records. For that reason, the article cannot be as long as, say, Hurricane Dennis because there are no land effects to report. —Cuiviénen on Tuesday, 6 June 2006 at 14:40 UTC

Bonkheads Realated

Hi, this is LordOfer. I saw what you did on the Bonkheads entry & it's great. I hope you're a bonkheads fan yourself. You probebly noticed that I emphasized the fact that the game in available for download. The reason for this is that this information is generally unknown. I think Home of the Underdogs is the only place you can get it, and it's very hard to find it (try finding it on google). I was very pleased when I found out that the game is downloadable some time ago (cause I had a very big nostalgia for it), and that's why I wanted to draw the reader's attention to the fact that he can download it. Why did you delete that comment? Is that a copyright issue?

Cheers, LordOfer

Hi Wackymacs - thanks for adding the extra info, but it really belongs at Poaceae, not at grass, which is only supposed to be a brief disambig page to sort off the things which are called 'grass' but are not in the family Poaceae. Could you transfer the detailed info to the Poaceae page, please (if it isn't already duplicated there!) - thanks, MPF 15:52, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

PS - there's some sort of formatting problem with the top of this page, the two templates force the text down below them leaving a huge white gap at the top of the page MPF

Wow! You really cleaned it up!. However, since i was new when i nominated it before and now i know what I'm doing, it doesn't quite seem like an FA, but it could become a good article. Keep up the good work! Chipka 15:01, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi, sorry for the late response, I've been thinking about it. I liked BTTF and got the trilogy on video for Christmas, and those had behind the scenes documentaries. So I imagine I can pitch in something, though in terms of personal interest BTTF won't draw me in to the extent Gremlins does. I'm waiting to see how Gremlins 2 goes, it might wear me out as far as movie articles go... Thanks, CanadianCaesar Cæsar is turn’d to hear 23:18, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Hello! The reason I removed the two links were that the sites contain material which are still under copyright and not licenced/released as freeware by the copyright owners. As such, distributing those files are illegal. Wikipedia:External links#Occasionally acceptable links asks not to link to pages which violate someone else's copyrights. Thus I consider removal of the links justified. Cheers! evktalo 10:05, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Hello again,

Yes, I've read the sites' disclaimers. The problem is they don't reduce the illegality of the sites. Mac Hut says their downloads are only meant as backup copies for people who already own a copy. This good intention does not legalize an illegal activity.

(see Nintendo's take on this: )

Dosgamezone's legal disclaimer is fine until "..or thier development has been discontinued by their developers and/or are no longer available for sale." Which means software protected by copyright. Promising to take the downloads down when contacted still does not make it legal.

I personally don't object to such abandonware sites as these, but the links are against Wikipedia policies as far as I can tell. I hope this clarifies my take on the matter. Cheers! evktalo 10:28, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm not quite sure what is the confusion here. So I probably am not able to give a satisfying answer. :-) For instance the Claris software that are featured on Mac Hut, now owned by Apple, if I'm correct, were released as commercial products and have not been released as freeware since those old versions have turned obsolete. This software usually has a licence that forbids copying, unauthorized redistribution etc.. I couldn't find any info about them being released as freeware.

Impressively it seems that a company called Sun Remarketing is still selling some legacy Apple software including MacPaint, although I can't seem to access their web page, maybe they are out of business (you wouldn't happen to have info on them?). Hopefully not, that's quite cool. :-)

till the next time evktalo 14:22, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi again,

the term abandonware has no legal weight, as mentioned in the abandonware article.

evktalo 15:03, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Hello once again,

first, the fact that the term "abandonware" has no legal meaning - ie. defining something abandonware does not free it from copyright - is an argument against placing those links in the article, since (a) linking to sites which violate copyrights is forbidden in Wikipedia:External links and (b) the link section is not for abandonware sites but sites which feature commercial software freed by copyright owners.

I hope I was clear enough this time.

cheers, evktalo 08:03, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi, could you specify why you oppose the removal of the links? To me it seems both sites offer downloads which violate copyrights and so far you haven't actually contested this view. cheers, evktalo 09:38, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

John Sculley

No problem. I did, however, find it odd that the famous 1984 commercial was not mentioned at all. His era for the Apple years starts the year before the ad was run and he's obviously this big marketing guy so it seems like he would have been a part of it. Maybe he wasn't though, I dunno. Just seemed like he would have been from reading the article. --SeizureDog 14:32, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Poetry

I'd appreciate it if you could revisit Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Poetry. Your concerns on footnoting and reference have been addressed; the poetic forms have been somewhat expanded, though for reasons set out on the talk page I do not think it is wise to overexpand them given the length of the article and the need for summary style with daughter articles. Thanks, Sam 00:37, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

And nice to be receiving your support in the FAC room, which has been sliding into a crowd-based mediocrity, IMV. Professional work is ramping up now; I'm freer after 30 June. In the meantime, I'll try to have a look. Tony 00:43, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Had a look at the top. If I may be so bold, you might consider using a comma after a prepositional/adverbial start to a sentence (although not always necessary). E.g., "After the company was established, the market ...". There's a slight tendency to word events as "began/started to [pursue an idea ...]". Sometimes OK, but occurs too often. Perhaps one or two precise temporal markers are unnecessary in this summary style. Tony 01:02, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

PS Just looked back over your talk page and noticed that you went through the medieval trial process of the RfA. I hope you're wearing the noble badge of rejection on that count (as I do); it means that you're a first-class WPian, and not a janitor. I hope I'm not offending anyone in saying this, but good editors don't usually make good janitors. I'm happy to let them do the low-level work of keeping the place running. I've just gone through a bout of bullying by several admins who are doing just what they're meant to be stopping. Tony 01:15, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
