Online magazines are websites which aggregate topics of common interest in a portal format
This is similar to the format of print magazines with several important distinctions. Online
magazines are not subject to the space limitations of traditional print media as a reader can
simply scroll down the page. Online magazines can have links to more detailed information
about selected topics.
Community websites in a portal format covering lifestyle topics can also be considered
online magazines. One of the pioneers in this field is a radio veteran and web guru named
Werner Poegel from Templeton, Massachusetts who started some online magazines in 2000 and has
benefited from the growth of the public's interest in the internet since that time. Mr. Poegel
founded an online magazine firm in 2005 after growing some online magazines for years,
including one for the town of Winchendon Massachusetts, the only town of its name in the entire
U.S.A. A simple search on any search engine for "Winchendon Massachusetts" usually pulls up
ToytownWeb.com.
The future of online magazines currently looks bright as the percentage of Americans using
the internet is now greater than 75%. Online magazines, like Wikipedia are free and thus do
not suffer from the audience-growth constraints which hold back online newspapers. In
addition, online magazines lend themselves to audio and video as well as the traditional text
and image webpage formats.
