[edit] Unreferenced BLPs

Information.svg Hello BRG! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 8 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 433 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

[edit] Discussion invitation

British Royalty Hi BRG, I would like to invite you and anyone watching who shares an interest in moving forward constructively to a discussion about Biographies of Living People

New editors' lack of understanding of Wikipedia processes has resulted in thousands of BLPs being created over the last few years that do not meet BLP requirements. We are currently seeking constructive proposals on how to help newcomers better understand what is expected, and how to improve some 48,000 articles about living people as created by those 17,500 editors, through our proper cleanup, expansion, and sourcing.

These constructive proposals might then be considered by the community as a whole at Wikipedia talk:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people.

Please help us:

[edit] Viertelpfünder mit Käse

In Mesures usuelles, you added a Viertelpfünder mit Käse as a fact. I've never seen one and only heard of it in the horrible synchronization of Pulp Fiction. It's a Royal in Germany. No Viertelpfünder anywhere. Do you have any sources? 78.55.50.92 (talk) 21:20, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

Heck, I saw it at a McD's when I was in Germany -- but that was in 1969, so they could have changed it since. -- BRG (talk) 21:09, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

[edit] We can't go on like this...

"Summertime (song)" is huge now, and looks terrible. How can we include versions w/out ending up like this? Gareth E Kegg (talk) 18:41, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Biographies of Living persons solution: Projectification?

As someone who commented on the BLP workshop I created, please review this proposal to see if it is something that the community would support.

Harsh constructive criticism is very welcome!

Better to figure out the potential objections now. I am looking to remedy any potential objections by the community.

Thanks. Okip (formerly Ikip) 03:20, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Orchestra leaders

Hi, I just came across Category:Orchestra leaders which you created a number of years ago, and I've been scratching my head about how to determine who might belong it, as distinct from Category:Conductors. So I'm wondering if you could explain what you had in mind -- and hopefully provide concise inclusion criteria. Thanks! Cgingold (talk) 11:47, 14 February 2010 (UTC)

  • Hi again, I thought I'd try again before I lose track of this. It would really help to have your thoughts on this before I proceed. Regards, Cgingold (talk) 02:54, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
    • Thanks for your detailed reply! I want to give it some thought, and then I'll get back to you. Cgingold (talk) 13:04, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Final discussion for Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people

Hello, I note that you have commented on the first phase of Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people

As this RFC closes, there are two proposals being considered:

  1. Proposal to Close This RfC
  2. Alternate proposal to close this RFC: we don't need a whole new layer of bureaucracy

Your opinion on this is welcome. Okip 02:03, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

[edit] I am puzzled

What is happening? Goochelaar (talk) 23:15, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

In a very short time you have inserted a lot of "citation needed" tags, all in articles I have started or to which I have contributed in significant measure. Are you trying to make some point I do not understand? Thanks, Goochelaar (talk) 23:29, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your answer. If you disagree with one of my edits, you are of course welcome to revert it, possibly explaining why in the article's talk page. Moreover, if you have something to tell me, please do, rather than sending a circuitous message through a barrage of edits (are you familiar with WP:POINT?).
As to your book, I am not the one who fixed the guideline about self-published sources:

Anyone can create a website or pay to have a book published, then claim to be an expert in a certain field. For that reason self-published media—whether books, newsletters, personal websites, open wikis, blogs, personal pages on social networking sites, Internet forum postings, or tweets—are largely not acceptable.

So, nobody here is bound to check "whether the mathematics is relevant and accurate" in your book, but rather, if necessary, to cite a reliable source instead. I have nothing against you, of course! But I find WP guidelines, on the whole, to be sound, and I dislike seeing them disregarded. Happy editing, Goochelaar (talk) 21:43, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
First of all, please do not resort to personal attacks, as in your sentence "I don't understand that you cannot realize this."
Next, you very correctly say "You can't make up mathematics; it's either correct (and thus, verifiable without sources!) or not". I could not agree more. But if so, why are you insisting on inserting this particular source, with which you could be seen has having a conflict of interests? You'd better remove the reference, and insert in the article the mathematical argument required there. Nobody can object to a correct mathematical argument; lacking that, I can be interested in a reference to a reliable (yes, indeed!) source: the first research paper some result appeared in, or a well-known treatise or textbook, at the very least because they are easier to find in a public or university library. Goochelaar (talk) 21:14, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

[edit] BLP sticky PROD

Hi BRG! If there is any consensus at at all, it is that the entire discussion has become a tangled confusion, and as a result both proponents and opponents of the issues under discussion are abandoning ship. None of us want this. It is still not clear which way consensus will fall and your contributions to the discussion are invaluable. However, In an attempt to keep the policy discussion on an even track, some users have decided to start the ball rolling for clarity by creating a special workshop pages. The first of these is for the technical development of a template at WT:BLP PROD TPL in case policy is decided for it . The taskforce pages are designed keep irrelevant stuff off the policy discussion and talk page, and help a few of us to move this whole debate towards a decision of some kind or another. The pages will be linked in a way that watchers will still find their way to them. This move is not intended to influence any policy whatsoever; It is to keep the discussion pages focussed on the separate issues. Cheers. --Kudpung (talk) 22:48, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

[edit] You are now a Reviewer

Redaktor Wikipedia 600px.png

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 18:51, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion nomination of Contract Bridge

A tag has been placed on Contract Bridge, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to an article talk page, file description page, file talk page, MediaWiki page, MediaWiki talk page, category talk page, portal talk page, template talk page, help talk, user page, user talk or special page from the main/article space.

If you can fix the redirect to point to a mainspace page, please do so and remove the speedy deletion tag. However, please do not remove the speedy deletion tag unless you are fixing the redirect. If you think the redirect should be retained as is for some reason, you can request that administrators wait a while before deleting it. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and state your reasoning on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. [edit] Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup!

  1. At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
  2. To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
  3. To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.

Apologies for the short notice for this meetup, but let's discuss when, where & what for DC Meetup #17. Also, if you haven't yet, please join wikimedia-dc mailing list to stay informed. Cheers, User:Aude (talk)

[edit] Dinah

  • Tell me how you think a source consisting entirely of a track listing is "reliable third party coverage" sufficient for a deprod. Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Otters want attention) 20:08, 4 June 2011 (UTC)
  • Oh, so you think "notability" is a crock then huh? Then why don't you go ahead and make an article on your toenails? I'd LOVE to see you fight for that to be kept. (Seriously, "It exists" is not a reason to keep. You MUST have more than just a track listing for an album. And "a few years ago", even then, it was NEVER acceptable for an article to be sourced to a website with literally nothing but a track list.) Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Otters want attention) 01:09, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
  • So tell me how you think the source is NON-TRIVIAL. Any album ever made will have a tracklist and release date somewhere. Even something spit out by some no-hit wonder 30 years ago. Do you really think you can hinge a whole article on "It was released on X date via Q Records, and has songs Z, Y and A" with LITERALLY no other info beyond that? Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Otters want attention) 19:25, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
  • I told you three times. A review of some sort would be enough for notability; albums that charted and/or were certified by the RIAA or a similar institution are generally considered notable too. I've found no reviews, chart positions or certifications. "A collection of the most important hits by a major artist is per se notable." — No it's not. Notability is NEVER inherited. It's entirely possible for a notable artist to put out a non-notable album. Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Otters want attention) 14:53, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Disambiguation link notification

Hi. When you recently edited Saint Agur Blue, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Cylinder (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

[edit] National Archives ExtravaSCANza

You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success!

This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us! Dominic·t 01:10, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

1 Wikipedians from DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Newark, New York City, and Pittsburgh have been invited.
